AEDP™ Core Training

As AEDP psychotherapy so powerfully demonstrates, deep and positive transformations occur in the context of safe, supportive and positive relationships. AEDP Core Training offers the quintessential opportunity for individuals of many levels to deepen their understanding of the theory and practice of AEDP in the inspiring company of motivated colleagues.

To create group safety, Core Training is intimate. It generally includes 6 – 8 participants who meet for five modules – sometimes over two days – that include a) didactic and clinical video shared by the presenting supervisor, followed by b) one hour for each group member to show tape of their own work and receive supervision and supportive feedback from group members.

Core Training is one of our most powerful learning opportunities for integrating AEDP theory and skills into your own clinical acumen. The concentrated time that members spend together tends to foster a culture of trust and generosity that allows the risk-taking of exposing one’s own videotaped work, offers valuable opportunities to learn from the work of others, and creates an environment that is uniquely suited for experiential and reflective learning. And the relationships that develop can last for years as members become each other’s professional support network.

Is Core Training a form of Group Supervision?

Yes! AEDP Core Training is a specific form of group supervision. When presented by AEDP Faculty and Certified Supervisors, Core Trainings are Institute-recognized and count toward AEDP Certification. All forms of group supervision allow for deep training in AEDP and intimate supervision from both peers and presenter. If you are considering Core Training, you may want to also consider other group supervision options (see the supervision offerings page here).

Here are some of Core Training’s special characteristics:

  • Commitment to 5 modules: Core Training participants are expected to commit to all 5 modules up front. Other forms of group supervision may be more flexible.
  • Number of participants: Core Trainings have between 5 and 10 participants. Other forms of group supervision can be of any group size.
  • Supervision hours: Core Training participants are expected to share a videotaped session in every Core Training “module” and will therefore receive 5 hours of supervision during the training. In other group supervision formats, tape sharing expectations are set by the supervisor and the length of participation in the group may vary along with the number of hours of supervision.
  • Hours of didactic instruction and clinical video shared by the supervising presenter. Core Trainings include at least 10 hours of instruction (2 hours per module) during which AEDP theory is taught and its clinical applications demonstrated through the presenter’s videotaped illustrations. In other group supervision formats, supervisors may or may not include these.
  • Prerequisites for and application / acceptance process for Core Training (these largely overlap with other group supervision options):
    • Applications and/or interviews are generally required by the presenter.
    • All Core Training participants must have at least completed AEDP Immersion; some Core Trainings have additional prerequisites determined by the presenter.
    • All Core training participants must be videotaping client sessions as supervision of permissioned videotaped sessions is an essential part of the training.
    • Participants must be licensed clinicians or the equivalent in their country.
  • Curriculum / theme / experience level / language / location: Each Core Training is unique as far as curriculum, theme, experience level, language and location. As long as the Core Training fits the special characteristics described above, the presenter may design their Core Training (and advertise its special characteristics) to meet their own interests and the interests and needs of their participants.

Continuing Education Credits and Certificates of Completion

  • AEDP Institute does not arrange for continuing education credits for Core Trainings; in some cases the presenting supervisor may arrange for CE – check with the presenting supervisor.
  • At the request of the presenting supervisor and a Core Training participant, the Institute will provide a certificate of completion for the Core Training.
  • Core Training is considered a ‘supervision option’ and it counts towards AEDP Certification.

How do I find or start a Core Training group?

Participants:

  • If you and one or more other colleagues would like to be in a Core Training together, reach out to a faculty member or certified supervisor as a group and see if they will consider offering a Core Training with you as the starting members. Institute-recognized Core Trainings can be held in person, online, or a combination of the two; they may be held in English or any other language. An interested presenter can work with you and/or with the Institute to gather additional members if needed.
  • Scan this page and the AEDP Member Bulletin Board for postings of Core Trainings being formed.
  • Post your wish to join or form a Core Training group – specific to your time zone / geographical location and language requirements on the AEDP Bulletin Board: ex: ISO (In Search Of) Core Training Presenter for West Coast USA; or Looking to join a Core Training in UK; etc.

Presenters:

  • Feel free to let the Institute know about your intent to form a Core Training group. We will add the information to this page and to the more general supervision offerings page, and encourage you to post your offering on the bulletin board.

How do I find other Group Supervision options?

  • Check out the Supervision offerings page – contact any faculty member or AEDP certified supervisor directly about their groups.
  • Scan the AEDP Member Bulletin Board for postings of groups being offered.
  • Post your wish to join a group on the AEDP Bulletin Board: ISO (In Search Of) Group Supervision
  • Ask an experiential assistant, lead assistant, supervisor or faculty member for a recommendation.
