This 5-Day Immersion Course in AEDP is intended for practitioners interested in AEDP,  (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotehrapy). Our focus is on AEDP’s transformational theory and practice using AEDP work at the edge of healing experience to repair attachment trauma. Making extensive use of clinical videotapes of actual therapy sessions as well as experiential work guided by experienced Assistants, the aim of this course is to introduce AEDP and facilitate its integration into clinical practices that make use of other experiential, body-focused, trauma-based, relational and/or psychodynamic methods.

Meet the Lead Presenters

Jennifer Edlin, MFT

Jennifer Edlin, MFT is a psychotherapist in private practice in Oakland, California. Jenn received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University, a JD/MBA degree from New York University and an MA in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. From the moment she attended her first AEDP Immersion Course, Jenn was taken by AEDP and the permission to be authentic and to use the therapist’s whole self in service of clients’ healing and transformation.

Jenn is developing AEDP theory and clinical interventions to use with dysregulated and underregulated clients, and has presented her work in 2019 in Boston, Portland and the Denver Immersion course.  In the years since she joined the AEDP Institute Faculty Jenn has been a Co-Director of the AEDP research project, working closely with Diana Fosha and Shigeru Iwakabe.

Jenn is gifted with left brain rigor and right brain intuition. We who know her are struck with the breadth and depth of her intellect, the bigness of her heart, her attunement and sensitivity, her remarkable capabilities in a multitude of areas, her huge capacity to integrate it all and translate it into effective action AND her passion for, commitment and devotion to AEDP.

Karen Kranz, PhD, R. Psych.

karen-kranz-copyDr. Kranz has been a psychologist in private practice in Vancouver Canada since 2000. Her areas of interest in AEDP are making the work with clients and therapists increasingly more relational and experiential. She is continually challenged and intrigued by core and pathogenic emotions and has completed the second draft of a paper about pathogenic affect with the working title of “Rock Logic & Rabbit Holes: The Phenomenology of Pathogenic State of Consciousness & its Impact on the Therapist’s State of Consciousness and Therapist-Client Intersubjectivity.”

After the Immersion course, she began supervision with Dr. Fosha. "At that time, all that interested me was becoming a better clinician, AEDP certification as a therapist and supervisor and becoming faculty were never my ambitions. However, as I deepened into both my knowledge and experience of AEDP and in the AEDP community, I realized that it was through the process of certification as a therapist, as a supervisor, and now with teaching and writing that I was becoming a better therapist."

With AEDP, Dr. Kranz says she "found a therapeutic home and a community of colleagues when I did not even know I was looking for one, or perhaps more aptly wasn’t looking for one because I did not believe such a home existed."

Nationally and internationally, Dr. Kranz supervises and teaches in Immersion Courses, Essentials Skills (ES1), Advanced Skills (ES2), and Core Training. Her most recent paper “Making AEDP supervision relational and experiential: Cultivating receptive affective capacity in supervisee and client” is published in the AEDP Journal Transformance.

He has also helmed Advanced Essential Skills courses in Stockholm and New York; taught/presented with the Essential Skills course in Parma, Italy; taught/ presented in Ithaca with the Central New York AEDP community; assisted with the NY Immersion Course with Diana Fosha; and has assisted in Essential Skills courses with Natasha Prenn, Ben Lipton and Eileen Russell. Ben also created and launched AEDP Jumpstart, a short-term, low-cost AEDP supervision group for those beginning AEDP supervision and/or beginning to review video of clinical material. Before private practice, Ben began a mental health program for study abroad students with the Scuola Lorenzo di Medici in Florence, Italy; worked in the Jewish Board of Family Services LGBTQ Unit; and worked in Greenwich House's HIV Mental Health and Chemical Dependency programs. His paper "Recovering the True Self: Affirmative Therapy, Attachment and AEDP in Psychotherapy with Gay Men" is published with the SEPI Journal: the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration. Ben earned his degree in Clinical Social Work with the NYU Silver School of Social Work.

Yuko Hanakawa, PhD

Yuko Hanakawa, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist in New York City. She was "raised" by AEDP from the very beginning of her career. While a doctoral student at Adelphi University, she met Diana Fosha who was a faculty member. Dr. Hanakawa has been captivated by the unfolding process of healing and growth that AEDP powerfully facilitates ever since.

Dr. Hanakawa has been particularly interested in the body-mind connection, memory reconsolidation, and the role of positive emotions in the process of transformation. Her paper, "Receiving Loving Gratitude: How a Therapist's Mindful Embrace of a Patient's Gratitude Facilitates Transformance," was published in the AEDP Transformance Journal, in 2011.  In addition to being trained by Dr. Fosha, she was in small group supervision with Dr. Jenna Osiason, and individual supervision with Dr. SueAnne Piliero.

Dr. Hanakawa feels passionate about cultivating ethnic/racial diversity in the AEDP community and serves as a co-chair of the Diversity Committee. She is also a member of the International Community Development committee, and has been creating AEDP communities among Japanese therapists in NYC and Japan. Along with Dr. Shigeru Iwakabe, she oversaw the Japanese translation of "The Transforming Power of Affect" by Dr. Fosha (2017); she also contributed a chapter to this book which focused on a clinical case conducted in Japanese.

Dr. Hanakawa was a faculty member at St. Luke’s Hospital where she directed the externship program, and taught and supervised staff and trainees. She maintains a private practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, offering in-person and on-line therapy and supervision. Additionally, she is certified in Neurofeedback and Hypnotherapy.  Dr. Hanakawa has presented locally and internationally and has supervised experiential groups in the AEDP Immersion and Essential Skills.
