“A PERFECT BALANCE OF DIDACTIC AND (EXCEPTIONAL) VIDEOS THAT HELPED DEEPEN MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE AEDP MODEL AND INTERVENTIONS.” “IT WAS MASTERFUL” “A TOP NOTCH TRAINING EXPERIENCE” “HEARTFELT” “MOVING” “ENLIGHTENING” “INSPIRING” “PROFOUND”
Description:
This seminar, presented in three 4.5-hour meetings, takes participants through an ex-army commander’s first six sessions of treatment with Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). Through lecture and the extensive use of video footage from each session, the presenter will recount their therapeutic journey, offering an extensive, naturalistic study of the experiential, relational, psychodynamic, healing centered elements of AEDP. AEDP schemas such as the four state model of change, the triangle of experience, the self-other-emotion triangle will be explored within the context of a sequential series of actual sessions. In addition to surveying the AEDP model specifically, the seminar will also illustrate the emergent, serpentine nature of therapeutic change and the dilemmas, errors and missed opportunities that typically occur in treatment.
Learning Objectives:
- Define the term “transformance” and identify three experiential markers that indicate an impetus to change.
- Name three interventions that help foster a client’s focus on their felt experience.
- List four characteristics of AEDP’s therapeutic stance.
- Contrast the verbal/nonverbal markers of core affect vs. defensive affect.
- Give examples of techniques used to facilitate the thorough processing of core affective experience.
- Demonstrate an understanding of AEDP’s four state model of change by distinguishing the distinct therapeutic intentions and interventions for each state.
- Compare the use/advantages of relational interventions vs. emotion processing interventions when tracking the client’s affect in the video sessions
- Describe 3-4 ways of neutralizing defenses in order to access, process and resolve underlying symptom-generating emotions.
- Compare the utility of using affect deepening interventions vs. reflecting interventions when tracking the client’s experience in the video sessions
- Explain the procedures associated with facilitated imaginal encounters with family and other significant people (“portrayals”) and differentiate interventions involving work with expressions of anger/assertion vs. those involving reparative experiences (compassion, understanding, gratitude, care).
- Explain how the AEDP schema known as the “Self-other-emotion triangle” can be used to delineate clinical entry points for experiential work with clients.
- Describe ways of addressing affect associated with shame and aloneness using relational and parts-work informed interventions as modeled in the presented video sessions
- Demonstrate an understanding of AEDP interventions designed to deepen and prolong positive affective states.
