Level: Open to all

Through structured, systematic practice, you’ll develop fundamental
therapeutic competencies while cultivating your unique personal style.

Description

Led by expert, AEDP Senior Faculty member, Natasha Prenn, this foundational training course introduces Deliberate Practice (DP) methodology for developing clinical expertise. Moving beyond the common misconception that expertise simply requires 10,000 hours of practice, this course demonstrates how quality-focused, structured practice leads to measurable skill improvement and clinical mastery.

The seminar progressively builds mastery through twelve foundational exercises, each targeting a specific therapeutic intervention. Each exercise provides step-by-step instructions focusing on essential clinical skills such as moment-to-moment tracking, working with anxiety and defenses, and facilitating experiential techniques like portrayals.

Key Research Findings:

  • Deliberate practice enhances therapist effectiveness more rapidly than accumulated clinical hours alone
  • Online deliberate practice platforms show comparable effectiveness to in-person training
  • Structured feedback and targeted skill development improve client outcomes

Learning Objectives: By the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define deliberate practice methodology and differentiate it from routine clinical experience.
  • Describe the key components of effective deliberate practice in AEDP.
  • Describe a systematic approach to developing therapeutic expertise using the twelve foundational exercises.
  • Demonstrate enhanced moment-to-moment tracking skills.
  • Explain deliberate practice principles to specific AEDP interventions, including working with anxiety, defenses, and experiential techniques.
  • Give examples of individualized deliberate practice routines that target specific areas for clinical skill development.
  • Predict treatment outcomes using structured feedback methods to assess the impact of deliberate practice on clinical effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate AEDP interventions with deliberate practice methodology to enhance therapeutic presence and responsiveness in challenging clinical moments.

Watch for Natasha Prenn’s forthcoming book, Deliberate Practice in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (APA June 2025), co-authored with Hanna Levenson, and edited by Alexandre Vaz, and Tony Rousmaniere.

Join Natasha for this immersive, hands-on experience where you’ll get direct feedback and guidance on applying deliberate practice techniques in real-time. A preview of the upcoming book, this seminar offers unique opportunities for live practice, personalized coaching, and community learning.
