ES1 Retreat Style Course in NYC 2018

This course is for Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Psychiatrists, Psychoanalysts, Social Workers, Counselors, MFTs, MD’s, Nurses, Creative Arts Therapists, Masters and Doctoral students and interns in mental health and the healing arts and sciences.
Healing-oriented and attachment-based, AEDP’s practice translates current neuroscience and developmental research into moment-to-moment clinical practice. Simultaneously experiential and relational in its in-depth emotional explorations, AEDP’s interventions are deeply rooted in the dynamics of the transformational process that emerges in environments where the individual feels safe and known.
AEDP Essential Skills Course will provide practical skills for the application of AEDP as well as a thorough immersion in the theory underlying the practice. Our aim is to teach, in both left-brained and right-brained ways, different types of clinical interventions so that participants will emerge with both an understanding and a felt sense of how to “do” AEDP. Each day’s teaching will include didactic presentations of theory along with video of actual sessions conducted by AEDP Faculty followed by small group experiential exercises.

What we consider AEDP’s “essential skills” will be didactically demonstrated and experientially explored so that participants develop both a felt sense and a cognitive understanding of them. A key component of the experiential practices is the opportunity to “try on” sets of interventions as a therapist and to receive them as a client. We have found that learning new skills can give rise to experiences of safety, attachment security, transformation, increased therapeutic courage, and related phenomena; precisely the kinds of experiences AEDP facilitates for its clients. In order to help foster this crucial kind of learning our ES courses are supported by highly skilled assistants. Each day, they aid the course faculty by leading small groups in practicing essential AEDP skills. The concentrated time that participants spend together immersed in learning inevitably leads to the development of a culture of trust and generosity that allows for risk-taking and a supportive environment that is uniquely suited for optimal learning.
At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Apply moment-to-moment tracking to clinical practice
- Classify different aspects within the Triangle of Experience, including both verbal and somatic processes, to optimize attunement and accelerate the healing process
- Define attachment styles and utilize different interventions according to attachment style
- Utilize various ways to regulate anxiety, bypass defenses and other inhibitory forces which block progress in therapy
- Identify and access core affective experiences
- Identify expressions of transformance in clients
- Practice utilizing transformance strivings as a catalyst to maximize patient’s healing
- Integrate healing and transformance from the get-go
- Demonstrate an AEDP therapist stance: welcome, affirm, validate, orient
- Practice being a “Transformance Detective”
- Find entry points: notice and seize
- Identify The Four States and Three State Transformations of AEDP
- Expand his/her own affective competence
- Understand the fundamental role of attachment work in AEDP and how it gets operationalized in the therapeutic dyad
- Construct right brain and non-verbal interventions that help deepen and create secure attachment between therapist and client
- Acquire explicit relational interventions appropriate for different styles of attachment among clients
- Cultivate and explore receptive capacities in our clients
- Build receptive affective capacity
- Recognize how the attachment between the therapist and client may be its own transformational process
- Melt and/or by-pass defenses
- Identify maladaptive/pathogenic affects
- Specify how processing affect to completion leads to adaptive action tendencies in the client that brings forth new ways to solve lifelong problematic patterns
- Facilitate different kinds of healing portrayals with clients
- Know how to use strategies to deepen and expand positive affective experience
- Catalyze healing at the edge of dissociation/unresolved trauma
- Specify and widen the window of affect tolerance: Resources that stabilize and scaffold both the therapist and the client
- Identify and process transformational affects
- Metaprocess and stay with visceral experience
- Know how to foster the development of the true Self and true other
- Work with core state and develop skills to enhance the spiral of transformation

Meet the Presenters:
Jeanne Newhouse, NCPsyA
Jeanne Newhouse, NCPsyA, is a licensed psychoanalyst who has been in private practice in New York City since 1988. Jeanne began the practice of helping and healing from a body-based model.
She is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique. She created a movement therapy program for the Smithers Institute, a residential treatment facility for substance abuse in New York City where she worked for six years. During that time she completed a master's degree in Motor Learning at Teachers College in New York City. As Jeanne worked with patients with chronic, physical pain, she recognized that healing the heart and soul was an integral part of healing the physical body. Hoping to put the two modalities together, she began a four-year training program at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy from which she graduated in 1988.
Jeanne was introduced to the work of Dr. Diana Fosha in 2005, who seemed in her work to be touching her patients without putting her hands on them, combining the wisdom of the body with the intelligence of the mind. She took Immersion 2006 and then 3-plus years of Core Training with Dr. Eileen Russell and 3 years of supervision with Natasha Prenn, LCSW.
In 2015 Jeanne became a Faculty member of the AEDP Institute. She has been part of the Essential Skills (ES1) courses since their inception and has "helmed" ES1 in North Carolina, New York, & Online.
Jeanne has recently added integrative Hypnosis to her knowledge / skill base as well as having completed the first stage of training at the Center for Mind Body Medicine in Maryland with Dr. Jim Gordan.
Jeanne's current interests run from creativity and imagination's role in therapy to the musicality of therapy and intentional language as well as the idea of deliberate practice where good therapy is not an accident.
Jeanne has a clinical practice in New York City and is also available for individual and group supervision.
SueAnne Piliero, PhD
Dr. Piliero travels nationally and internationally to teach AEDP to clinicians and mental health professionals around the world.
She is known for her warm, engaging teaching style and her ability to communicate complex topics with humor and clarity. Dr. Piliero has developed a relationally bold clinical method called Fierce Love. Her clinical work, which embodies Fierce Love, powerfully demonstrates how even the most traumatized patients can be transformed.
Dr. Piliero is a lead trainer in the AEDP Institute’s Essential Skills Courses, a lead supervisor of the AEDP Core Training Program, and a highly sought after consultant. Dr. Piliero received her master’s degree in human development and psychology from Harvard and her doctorate in clinical psychology from Adelphi University. Her clinical interests and specialties are in trauma, dissociation, toxic shame, and the ways in which the mind, body, spirit is powerfully poised to transform them.In addition to AEDP, Dr. Piliero is trained in EMDR, Brainspotting, and Parts work, all of which she weaves into her clinical work. She teaches, consults, and maintains a private practice in New York City.
Benjamin Lipton, LCSW
Benjamin Lipton, LCSW, is a founding faculty member of the AEDP Institute. He is based in New York City and travels nationally and internationally to teach and present AEDP to a broad range of professional audiences. Mr. Lipton pioneered the first AEDP Advanced Core Training programs (Bay Area and Seattle) and currently co-leads the AEDP Retreat Style Essential Skills course. His open and engaging teaching style and skill in translating complex ideas into clear and accessible learning points receives consistent praise from his audiences. Mr. Lipton is the editor of From Crisis to Crossroads: Gay Men Living with Chronic Illnesses and Disabilities (Haworth Press) and has published many clinical articles and book chapters in psychology and social service journals over the past two decades. His most recent article, co-authored with Diana Fosha, is on working with attachment in AEDP; Attachment as a Transformative Process in AEDP: Operationalizing the Intersection of Attachment Theory and Affective Neuroscience. Mr. Lipton has held adjunct faculty appointments at Columbia Presbyterian Department of Psychiatry and New York University School of Social Work and he serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services. Previously, he was the Director of Clinical Services at Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the world’s first and largest HIV/AIDS service organization. In addition to his expertise in AEDP, Mr. Lipton has training in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing, Solution-Focused therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Mr. Lipton is committed to the foundational principle of human development that change for the better, at every level of civilization, flourishes when people feel safe enough to be curious and take necessary risks. He is passionately dedicated to bringing this alive in both his practice and teaching.
Karen Pando-Mars, MFT
Karen Pando-Mars, MFT, is a psychotherapist in San Rafael, California, and Senior Faculty of the AEDP Institute. She was irresistibly drawn to AEDP in 2005 and captivated by the depth and breadth of this transformational model. She immersed herself in training and consultation with Dr. Fosha and three years of core training with Dr. Frederick. Ms. Pando-Mars is one of the founders of AEDP West and chaired the AEDP Institute Education Committee from 2011-2018.
Ms. Pando-Mars' passionate interest in what cultivates deep connection between Self and Other has been furthered by attachment theory and related neuroscience. She is known for her presence, warmth, and the clarity of her presentations. Videotapes of her clinical work are moving and inspiring examples of how AEDP’s explicit relational and experiential practices can help patients heal from relational trauma.
Ms. Pando-Mars arrived to AEDP with background in somatic and experiential therapies, including Focusing, Biofeedback, Process-Oriented Psychotherapy, Sandtray-Worldplay, EMDR, and Authentic Movement. These influences are deeply woven throughout her work. She was a founder of The Sandtray Network and a contributing editor of its journal. As adjunct faculty at Dominican University, in San Rafael, California, she taught AEDP as the overarching theoretical model in the Alternative and Innovative Psychotherapies course.
She presents workshops on AEDP, teaches and leads Essential and Advanced Skills courses, Core training and supervision across the United States and internationally. Her publication “Tailoring AEDP interventions to attachment style,” 2016 Transformance Journal, 6 (2) is the basis for her upcoming book, which will be co-authored with Diana Fosha and published by Norton & Co.

Note, however, that Intro to AEDP is by no means a substitute for Immersion and Immersion is a requirement for AEDP certification. You will earn 6 CE for taking this course. Once you have completed the course you will eligible for a $100 credit towards a future Immersion course.
