AEDP® Immersion Overview

Immersion is the first step in your AEDP journey, offering a deep dive into the theory, practice, and spirit of AEDP. This transformative, multi-day experience is designed for therapists at all stages of their professional careers and serves as the foundation for AEDP training.

Through a combination of engaging lectures, clinical video presentations, and experiential exercises, Immersion provides a rich learning environment where you’ll explore AEDP’s healing-oriented approach and core principles. Whether you’re new to the model or looking to deepen your understanding, this course lays the groundwork for integrating AEDP into your clinical practice, setting the stage for further training and skill development.

What to Expect

The Immersion course provides a comprehensive dive into AEDP psychotherapy’s transformative theory and practice. By the end of the course, participants gain both a solid understanding of AEDP theory and practical, hands-on skills they can immediately apply in their work with clients. This professional training equips therapists to use beginner-level AEDP techniques across a range of clinical populations and supports the integration of AEDP into multi-modal practices, particularly those incorporating experiential, body-focused, trauma-informed, relational, and psychodynamic approaches.

Hallmarks of Training

Faculty, experiential assistants and clinical video. These are the hallmarks of AEDP training. In AEDP, we pride ourselves in how thoroughly and deeply we seek to both undo professional aloneness and engage in rigorous clinical teaching. Our faculty are excellent as academics, clinicians and teachers.

Daily Routine

The AEDP Immersion course typically follows a structured routine designed to integrate both didactic learning and experiential practice. The day often begins with lectures on AEDP psychotherapy’s theoretical foundations, followed by clinical video demonstrations where participants observe real therapy sessions. These videos are key to understanding how AEDP is applied in practice. The course also includes one afternoon of small group experiential exercises where participants get hands-on practice with the guidance of experienced assistants. Throughout the course, there are opportunities for Q&A to clarify concepts and deepen understanding. This blend of lecture, demonstration, and experiential learning helps participants absorb the material more fully and gain the confidence to apply AEDP in their own clinical work.

Prerequisites

Immersion is open to all licensed mental health practitioners – see course pages for more details. This course is a prerequisite for the Essential Skills training. While it counts toward certification, you don’t need to be pursuing certification to attend.

What participants have to say about Immersion

That was the best training I have ever experienced! I will be exploring the next steps in my AEDP training very soon. Thank you again, what an amazing Institute and team of people you all are!
Lisa Corey, LMFT

As I heard Diana Fosha eloquently lay out the theoretical basis of AEDP seamlessly integrating the clinical and research literature on attachment with affective neuroscience, and then witnessed its immediate positive impact on the many clients we saw on videotape, and then had the opportunity to safely practice some of the new learning with fellow [Immersion] participants, I still vividly recall the feeling of “coming home” and the recognition that AEDP would henceforth ground my clinical work, my teaching, and my personal exploration.
-Steve Kanofsky, PhD Professor Emeritus, The Wright Institute, Berkeley, CA

I was amazed at the difference I saw within myself and in my own sessions with clients right away when applying the skills that Jerry taught
Jerry struck a great balance between eliciting participants’ existing strengths, knowledge base, and felt sense and sharing the theory and practice of AEDP in a clear and operable way
