Certification Pathways at a Glance

AEDP offers two primary certification pathways:

  • AEDP Certified Therapist – recognizing competence and integration of AEDP clinical practice
  • AEDP Certified Supervisor – recognizing readiness to supervise, mentor, and train other AEDP therapists

Both pathways are grounded in experiential learning, videotaped clinical work, reflective practice, and relational supervision.

Becoming an AEDP Certified Supervisor (Overview)

AEDP Certified Supervisors play a vital role in stewarding the model, mentoring therapists, and supporting the growth of the AEDP community. The supervisor pathway is intentionally developmental and emphasizes both clinical mastery and supervisory presence.

The Supervisor certification pathway includes two stages:

  1. AEDP Supervisor-in-Training
  2. AEDP Certified Supervisor

AEDP Supervisor-in-Training

Therapists who have been AEDP Certified for at least one year may apply to become Supervisors-in-Training. This stage focuses on learning to supervise AEDP work through:

  • Experiential assisting in AEDP trainings
  • Supervision-of-supervision using videotaped supervision sessions
  • Study of AEDP supervision theory and practice
  • Ongoing evaluation using the AEDP Supervisor Certification rubric, here

    Important notes:
  • -Supervisors-in-Training may provide supervision to therapists at any level. A maximum of 10 total supervision hours—whether received from one or multiple Supervisors-in-Training—may be applied toward AEDP Level 3 supervision requirements.
  • -Supervisors-in-Training may offer additional supervision beyond these 10 hours, which is encouraged for skill development and consultation; however, these additional hours do not count toward Level 3 requirements or Certification.NOTE: Supervisors-in-Training may not serve as Certification Supervisors for level 3 therapists going for certification.

Graduation to AEDP Certified Supervisor

Certification as an AEDP Supervisor requires demonstrated readiness to supervise AEDP work with depth, clarity, and fidelity to the model. This includes:

  • Completion of required supervision-of-supervision hours
  • Advanced experiential assisting and community engagement
  • Submission of a Supervisor Culminating Project, including recorded supervision of recorded therapy sessions
  • Review by the AEDP Supervisor Certification Review Board

The full eligibility criteria, application steps, supervision requirements, culminating project guidelines, fees, and review timeline are outlined on the AEDP Supervisor Certification pages.
