AEDP Immersion in Rome, Italy
April 14th – 17th, 2016

Undoing Aloneness & the Transformation of Emotional Suffering

At the Istituto Di Scienze Cognitive

With Diana Fosha, Ph.D.

This 4-Day Immersion Course in AEDP is recommended to all professionals doing therapy with individuals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, counselors, and students training in these professions. It will be of great interest to those wishing to transform their clinical practices by translating cutting edge developments in attachment and neuroscience research into systematic teachable and learnable interventions.

We are wired for growth, healing, and self-righting, and for resuming impeded growth. Until recently, focused on pathology, our field lacked concepts to capture the thrust toward health residing within us all. Transformance, Diana Fosha’s powerful construct, changes all that: supported by cutting edge research in neuroplasticity, transformance defines the innate motivation toward healing and self-repair, and is at the core of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), a transformational and healing-oriented – rather than psychopathology based – model of therapy. Drawing on emergent research in neuroscience, development, and neuroplasticity, and with transformance as its cornerstone, AEDP rectifies the bias towards pathology: building on our natural resilience, AEDP’s therapeutics is based in our innate healing capacities, including our innate capacities for deep connection.

One of the fastest-growing approaches to working with attachment trauma, AEDP emphasizes the importance of undoing aloneness and the co-creation of safety: with accompaniment, patients can risk revisiting past trauma and suffering. AEDP is unique in its intimate yet rigorous way of working with relational experience moment-to-moment. Healing and neuroplasticity are set in motion through fully experiencing previously feared emotions in a secure relationship, and through gentle, yet focused, explicit attention to the experience of healing within the patient-therapist relationship. Specific AEDP intervention strategies, rooted in the phenomenology of the transformational process, are designed to work explicitly, dyadically, and experientially with intense traumatic emotions in a way that brings resilience to the fore, and fosters patients’ feeling deeply seen, recognized, cared about and understood. Processing both traumatic and restorative emotional experiences, the transformational process AEDP unleashes culminates in vitality, energy, and the non-finite positive emotion-fueled spirals of resilience, well-being and creativity that are so highly correlated with health. As suffering is transformed, there is a deepening of receptive affective experiences of feeling seen, felt, loved and understood. Patients’ internal working models of attachment are also transformed.

AEDP works at the emergent edge of the human spirit where recognition, integration, and nonfinite transformational spirals activate resources and generate well-being, love, play, connection, resilience, immune health, creativity and compassion.

Through extensive audio-visually recorded actual therapy sessions, this immersion course will provide ample exposure to AEDP’s hallmark techniques that: (i) actively and explicitly work with the experience of the attachment, here-and-now, in the therapeutic dyad; (ii) use dyadic affect regulation to undo aloneness and process intense overwhelming emotions; and (iii) actively, explicitly and experientially work to process intense emotional experiences until adaptive healing resources are released. The clinical videotapes will also demonstrate the technique of metatherapeutic processing, AEDP’s unique and systematic set of interventions for processing transformational experience, which expands healing, fuels upward spirals of positive affect, vitality, and energy and which can consolidate therapeutic gains, foster resilience, and expand relational capacity.

In this training you will learn:

  • How to recognize transformance and put it into clinical action
  • The map of AEDP, i.e., the phenomenology of the transformational process to guide moment-to-moment tracking and choice of interventions
  • How to work experientially with relational experience in a way that is both safe and effective
  • How to facilitate the dyadic affect regulation of previously feared-to-be-unbearable emotions
  • Work with intense emotional experience, so as to be able to transform suffering into resilience
  • How to work to increase patients’ receptive capacity, i.e., capacity to “take in” aspects of the attachment experience
  • Metatherapeutic processing techniques, i.e., how to use the patients’ experience of transformation to activate further healing and greater consolidation of gains already made

June 20th – June 24th, 2016

COURSE CLOSED

This 5-Day Immersion Course in AEDP is intended for practitioners interested in AEDP, in its transformational theory, and in exploring its applications to the treatment of attachment trauma. Our focus is on AEDP and the theory and practice informing AEDP work at the edge of healing experience to repair attachment trauma. Making extensive use of clinical videotapes of actual therapy sessions, the aim of this course is to foster proficiency in the practice of AEDP, as well as facilitate its integration into clinical practices that make use of other experiential, body-focused, trauma-based, relational and/or psychodynamic methods.

Theoretical Framework: Clinical Teaching from Videotapes

AEDP seeks to undo the patient’s aloneness in the face of overwhelming suffering and to engage innate healing forces within, i.e., transformance, so as to heal trauma, restore vitality to self experience, and engender resilience.

AEDP engages the process of deep emotional change and features a theoretical framework for transformational work. Seamlessly and organically integrative of attachment, emotion, affective neuroscience, mother infant studies, experiential techniques and body based trauma treatments, AEDP’s attachment based transformational framework scaffolds AEDP’s hallmark moment-to-moment to moment clinical work, which traces an arc whereby emotional suffering is seamlessly transformed into flourishing. This course will teach you how to work at the edge of transformational experience and how to use somatic-affective transformational markers to guide interventions. You will learn how to use AEDP’s rigorous transformational phenomenology to closely track clinical processes. Extensive use of clinical videotapes will demonstrate hallmark AEDP techniques such dyadic affect regulation; experiential work with attachment experience; working with receptive affective experience, such as feeling felt, feeling seen, and feeling cared for; processing emotion through to a transformational shift; and the metaprocessing of transformational experience. Experiential exercises will allow you to both practice AEDP interventions and experience how brain, body, psyche and the experience of human connection and transformation intertwine to unleash deep emotional change and heal attachment trauma.

What Does an Average Day Look Like?

  • Each day begins with a 90-minute theoretical presentation grounding the clinical work in the conceptual framework of AEDP’s healing oriented transformational theory.
  • The remainder of the day will consist of clinical teaching revolving around clinical videotapes, with a focus on the phenomenology of transformation and techniques, and strategies of intervention. Special attention will be accorded to working with the experience of transformation, the healing affects, offering and receiving affirmation, and promoting core state experiencing, all in the context of transforming attachment trauma. In essence, this Immersion course is a soup-to-nuts course in AEDP.
  • The format will be highly interactive and emphasize the back and forth with participants, thus activating dyadic processes of communication. There will be an opportunity to practice aspects of AEDP through structured-in experiential exercises.

Videotapes Will Help You Learn and Practice How To:

  • entrain neuroplasticity and harness healing forces from the get-go
  • be a transformance detective
  • work experientially with the experience of attachment in the here-and-now therapeutic relationship
  • use affective/somatic affective markers to moment-to-moment track clinical process and guide interventions
  • recognize the phenomenology of the transformational process: the 4 states and 3 state transformations of AEDP
  • use dyadic regulation to undo the patient’s aloneness in the face of overwhelming emotional experience
  • use dyadic affect regulation to transform shame and fear; restore connection, flow and awe
  • regulate and process emotion to a transformational shift, from negative to a point where positive affects and adaptive action tendencies are released
  • use healing affects to foster True Self experience through being a True Other
  • metaprocess transformational experiences to engender upward spirals of resilience, health, creativity, & well-being, i.e., flourishing
  • promote core state and experiences of openness, compassion, self-compassion, flow, ease, wisdom, generosity, and calm

It is the vision of the course to bring together clinicians from different perspectives who share an interest in AEDP specifically and/or in dynamic-experiential work in general, but who also each bring his or her own very special expertise, interest and experiences. In this way, not only will the course be exciting and enlivening, but AEDP will continue to grow, be enriched and enhanced by being in communication, or dyadic coordination with these other lodes of knowledge and wisdom. Given the interest expressed in this course, it looks like that vision might be actualized, which is a very exciting prospect.

Advanced Immersion Course • 2015 • Hong Kong

The Annual Autumn AEDP Immersion in Hong Kong
October 30th – November 1st, 2015

The Butterfly Effect: Phenomenology of Transformation and Transcendence with Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy

Aiming as an introduction to Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy for colleagues in the mental health field (social work, counselling, clinical psychology, psychiatry), this three-day Immersion Course will focus on the phenomenology of relational attachment, emotional transformation and transcendence.

Centering on the assessment and treatment interventions of trauma through the lens of Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), the three-day immersion course will focus on three inter-related strands:

En-Train Safety and Security: An AEDP therapist seeks to co-create a safe and secure  base from which a patient’s painful and previously overwhelming relational experiences     can be explored and cognitively and emotionally integrated into a coherent narrative.     Guided by interventions that are affirming, explicitly empathic, affect regulating, and  emotionally engaged, the discussion will focus on the ability to facilitate and co-construct     a secure patient therapist relationship from the get go

En-Courage the Experience and Expression of Core Affect: AEDP is fundamentally  an experiential model of psychotherapy that fosters the provision and facilitation of new     healing experiences involving state transformations of both mind and body.  At the core  of AEDP is a theoretical model of “The Three States and Two State Transformations”       outlining a process of therapeutic movement from Defense to Core Affect to Core State.   This discussion will concentrate on these phenomena and clinical proficiency in  facilitating the process of state transformation through stage-appropriate strategies of intervention.

En-Trance of Core State: In both theory and practice, AEDP is a synthetic, integrative  model of change for the better. AEDP therapists seek to facilitate positive transformation  and to process emotional experiences to completion as indicated by 1) the release of adaptive action tendencies in the wake of deep emotional experiencing and 2) a patient’s integration of these actions with coherent cognitions about her/his autobiographical  narrative and current state.  Effective AEDP treatment fosters a patient’s emergent and deep understanding of his/her own dynamics, tendencies and processes of healing.  Moreover, the process of transformation of the self in the context of a healing relationship is, in itself, a positive affective change process.

Click here to learn more about the AEDP Immersion course.

Training Format

The format of the seminar presentation will be conducted with three pedagogical styles, didactic lecture (33%), experiential exercises (33%) and video discussions (33%):

Didactic Lectures: Focusing on the phenomena of psychological trauma, assessment and  treatment interventions, the clinical material will be presented in English and supplemented by Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin). A handout containing power-points of the lecture and reading material will be given to each participant.

Experiential Exercises and Micro-Skills Development: The presenter will lead the  audience in a series of experiential exercises designed for self-help use and also for  clinicians to teach clients/patients in psychological resource development, as such  accelerating the healing of the traumatic experience. Each participant is encouraged to  practice during the session with guidance from the presenter.

Video Demonstration and Case Discussion: Video demonstrations of live patients in  various phases of trauma treatment will be shown, with a play-by-play, and  moment-to-moment commentary from the presenter.

All efforts will be made to so that the clinical material as practical as possible to  facilitate immediate use by the Mental Health Clinician (Social Worker, Psychologist, Physician) with his/ her client. During any part of the presentation, interactive questions and discussions from the audience are welcomed and encouraged.

Event Details

Schedule

Monday – Friday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
There will be a 15 minute break in the AM and PM and a one hour lunch
(on your own).
No reading prerequisite.

The UBC campus has a lot to offer and because of that it will be easiest if you can refer to some of the links and documents too.

Here is something that Diana has sent out in the past;

“Being a devout believer in emergence, there isn’t a tight schedule.Since the combination of didactic, clinical tape presentations with moment-to-moment tracking and sprinkling of experiential exercises will depend on how things unfold. What is set, is that: on the third day (Wednesday afternoon), we will have a presentation from faculty member Dale Trimble; on Thursday morning, the morning of the fourth day, we will have presentations from Senior faculty members David Mars and Karen Pando-Mars, and on Thursday afternoon we will have the extensive (richly assisted) experiential exercises/practice, which will be followed by the cocktail party on Friday evening. I don’t think anyone wants to miss the closing on Friday afternoon. I so look forward to sharing in this work.”

Guests who have booked accommodations on campus (Walter Gage Residence or West Coast Suites) will be able to get parking, which is provided on a first come first serve basis, at the Walter Gage Residence for $9/day + tax.

If you are staying off campus, use the North Parkade $14/day max rate ($1.75 every 30 minutes…so for a full day the flat $14/day kicks in)

Food

For those staying at either the Walter Gage Residence or West Coast Suites breakfast is provided each morning in the Student Union Building (Pacific Spirit Cafeteria) and it is included in your stay.

If you bring your own meals and require a microwave there is one in the basement of the Student Union Building. Those staying off campus may venture here for breakfast (or other meals) for a fee.

Please note that we will provide coffee service each day along with an assortment of food items each morning and at the morning and afternoon breaks (in the Isabel MacInnes room)…a quick and simple something…and we’ll do our best to accommodate everyone’s needs. Everyone is on their own for lunch.

Meeting Space

Walter Gage Residence – Isabel MacInnes Room

Attached are two maps, one with coordinates, the other I have labeled with arrows on the various spaces each day. I would print both and reference both; the campus is quite large.

The set-up is classroom style and there are plenty of tables/chairs with access to power should you need it. As with all meeting rooms, the chairs are moderately comfortable and the room temperature fluctuates. Please plan accordingly. There is plenty of room to stand, stretch, and walk around.

Please refrain from wearing strongly scented products.

Internet Access Code

There is complimentary wireless internet access in the West Coast Suites. In all other guest rooms at the Walter Gage Residence there is complimentary wired internet access, guests will have to bring their own Ethernet cables or they can purchase them at the front desk (limited number available).

In the lobby area and throughout most of campus there is complimentary wireless internet access as well, however it does not work in the guest rooms.

The network is the UBC Visitor Network, guests will need to read the terms & conditions then enter their email address to get access.

As the week winds down many of you may be checking out of your hotel room to catch a flight right after the event, while we can’t be responsible for your belongings, you may stash your items under the skirted registration tables. Please check with volunteers and they will assist.
