AEDP affective change processes provide the scaffolding for AEDP clinical practice and transformational theory.


AEDP has always been a multifaceted transformational therapy. Naturally occurring, adaptive, affective change processes have always been at the heart of AEDP Psychotherapy’s healing oriented, radically relational, dyadically experiential transformational practice. These discrete AEDP affective change processes provide the scaffolding for AEDP clinical practice and transformational theory. They in essence operationalize and account for how change takes place in AEDP Psychotherapy. Furthermore the clinical, practice-based theory of AEDP has also grown: It has expanded, deepened and been put to the test hundreds of thousands of times in transformational moments between patients and us, their AEDP therapists, worldwide.

With the advent of empirical research into AEDP Psychotherapy effectiveness (DiCorcia et al., 2022; Iwakabe et al, 2020; Iwakabe et al., 2022; Notsu et al., 2022), the need to systematize, codify and measure outcome and process in AEDP psychotherapy has led to the development of what we have come to call The Magnificent 9 +1 Affective Change Processes Scale. This scale, also evolving, attempts to capture what makes AEDP so effective for so many patients.

This course explores 9 affective change processes specific to AEDP, as well as the mystery factor, the “+1”. The 9 affective change processes are: i. Transformance detection & affirmation of the self; ii. Noticing & seizing a moment of emergence; iii. Undoing aloneness; iv. Experiential focus; v. Disarming defenses; vi. working to regulate dysregulated experience; vii. Experientially processing core affective experience, aiming toward a corrective emotional experience; viii. The broadening & building of transformational experience, i.e., metatherapeutic processing; ix. Expanding core state experiences and the integration of transformation into self.

This year’s course will also explore in some depth the 5 different subcategories of affective change process #VII, Experientially processing core affective experience: In addition to (a) the experiential processing of emotional experience; (b) experiential work with the experience of attachment in the here-and-now of the therapeutic relationship and (c) the experiential processing of intrarelational experience, we will attend to a couple of newcomers: (d) experiential work with SELF experience; and (e) work with dynamically significant autobiographical unfolding.

This Advanced Skills training is in keeping with the AEDP model: from experience comes insight and meaning. Insight and meaning are incredibly important and indeed transformational, however, understanding follows from experience. This is an opportunity to reflect and integrate and experience (via the realization affects) that a new and deeper understanding has the potential to re-organize everything that came before it, and thus can lead to more rounds of the transformational spiral.

AEDP psychotherapy is an empirically supported model that heals trauma and helps to undo aloneness by championing the innate healing capacity of neuroplasticity in a safe, attached therapeutic relationship.

Through moment-to-moment, in-depth processing of difficult emotional and relational experiences, AEDP clinicians help clients recover their sense of core self and experience increased resilience and a renewed zest for life. 

AEDP has roots in many disciplines including interpersonal neurobiology, attachment theory, emotion theory and affective neuroscience, body-focused approaches as well as transformational studies.

As a clinical treatment, AEDP is effective with a variety of psychological symptoms and issues, including depression, emotion dysregulation, negative thoughts, experiential avoidance, and interpersonal problems. AEDP is also effective in enhancing positive functioning such as self-compassion, well-being, and self-esteem.

AEDP Works, LLC offers continuing education (CE) credits upon completion of the following requirements: (a) completion of administrative processing (processing fee applies except where prohibited by state regulations), (b) perfect attendance, and (c) submission of the online program evaluation.

Meet the Presenter: Diana Fosha, PhD

Diana Fosha, PhD, is the developer of AEDP™ psychotherapy, a healing-based, transformation-oriented treatment model. And she is Founder and Director of the AEDP Institute. For the last 20 years, Diana has been active in promoting a scientific basis for a healing-oriented, attachment-emotion-transformation focused trauma treatment model. Fosha’s work focuses on integrating positive neuroplasticity, recognition science and developmental dyadic research into experiential and transformational clinical work with patients. Her most recent work focuses on promoting flourishing as a seamless part of the AEDP therapeutic process of transforming emotional suffering. Drawing on affective neuroscience, attachment theory, mother-infant developmental research, and research documenting the undreamed-of plasticity in the adult brain, AEDP is an experiential clinical practice which reflects the integration of science,research and practice in psychotherapy.

Attendance and Make up Policy

Institute Sponsored Courses Including Immersion, Essential Skills, Advanced Skill Modules, Seminars/Webinars and Institute Sponsored Core Trainings

The AEDP Institute does not offer make-ups for missed course days. In the rare case where someone joins a course late, or misses a session in the middle of a course, the hour(s) or day(s) that person misses cannot be made up. Why? Group dynamics developed during a course are essential to the course’s success; so someone coming into a course for a short period of time is – regardless of their best intentions – disruptive to other participants and the course’s overall success. The Institute will, however, provide handouts from missed hours or days but will not allow a person to make up the hours or days they miss in another course.

AEDP Level credit: if a participant attends 80% or more of a course, the Institute will apply the course towards AEDP Level advancement

Program Cancellation/Changes

The AEDP Institute reserves the right to cancel a training/ program prior to its start, in which case full refunds will be issued to participants for any tuition fees paid for the program. The AEDP Institute is not responsible for participant expenses including travel, childcare, missed practice sessions, etc.

In the rare situation that the AEDP Institute makes changes to advertised presenter(s), tuition fees will not be refunded.

By adhering to these policies, we aim to ensure a fair and consistent approach to cancellations, refunds, and transfer requests.
