Blinded by the Light
A primer on AEDP work with complex trauma and dissociation
An AEDP Institute Sponsored New England Seminar
with AEDP Sr. Faculty Member Jerry Lamagna, LCSW
This seminar is intended for professionals in mental health and the healing arts and sciences including Psychologists, Psychoanalysts, Social Workers, Counselors/Marriage and Family Therapists, Creative Arts Therapists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Educators, Nurses and related licensed professionals.
AEDP is a psychotherapeutic approach guided by the principle, “Stay with it and stay with me”. While such experiential invitations are very helpful in fostering change for many patients in therapy, they run completely counter to everything survivors of complex trauma have needed to do to survive horrific abuse, neglect and personal betrayal.
In this workshop, Jerry Lamagna LCSW provides a primer on treating complex trauma, suggesting important modifications to AEDP that focuses the therapeutic work on stabilization, titrated relational contact, the establishment of internal and external safety/communication/collaboration and self building in preparation for later work with trauma processing and integration.
Main points of workshop:
- AEDP is an integrative model of psychotherapy that draws on experiential and relational elements in its approach to healing. Focus on felt experience and relational contact often needs to be modified when working with highly traumatized patients.
- It is important for AEDP trained clinicians working with highly traumatized patients to have an understanding of dissociation and its impact on their patient’s psychological functioning.
- While experiential therapies emphasize the expression of categorical emotions like anger and grief in healing, it is important for AEDP therapists to develop skillfulness in working with other, less intense affective change processes to promote healing.
- The Structural Dissociation Model (Steele, Van der Hart, Nijenhuis, 1994?) provides a means for orienting/organizing psychotherapeutic work with trauma and dissociation, one that takes into account the needed capacities and the many fears often associated with processing traumatic memories.
- Clinical flexibility, patience, self regulation/awareness, moment to moment attunement, and knowledge of the dynamics of each patient’s internal system are crucial to effective trauma treatment.
Objectives:
- Identify three phobias associated with trauma work based on the structural model of dissociation.
- Describe two AEDP-based therapeutic interventions that aid in the patient’s development of emotion regulation.
- Name two affective change processes in AEDP that can help stabilize patients in early trauma treatment.
- Define “Intra-relational AEDP” and identify two goals associated with its use.
