Undoing Aloneness: The Transformation of Emotional Suffering with a Focus on Relational Resourcing in AEDP

Aloneness in the face of overwhelming emotion is the epicenter of emotional suffering. Attachment is key to undoing that aloneness so that previously feared-to-be overwhelming emotions can be processed and thus trauma transformed.   Yet clinicians worry that working directly with the patient-client attachment in the here-and-now would be destabilizing, especially for clients with histories of trauma. In this workshop, AEDP, one of the fasted growing approaches to working with attachment trauma, addresses that head-on: it showcases the notion of relational resourcing and breaks it down into its constituent elements to show how, in AEDP, experiential work with the therapist-client relationship can be done safely, AND can actually resource the client for the trauma-processing work ahead.

Relational resourcing is just one of the many rich creative systematic interventions that AEDP has developed to undo the client’s aloneness.  Through extensive audio-visually recorded actual therapy sessions,  this workshop will demonstrate AEDP’s hallmark techniques of dyadic affect regulation, healing-oriented emotion-processing, and  metatherapeutic processing (to process transformational experience) to transform suffering into resilience, consolidate therapeutic gains, expand relational capacity, and deepen receptive affective experiences of feeling seen, felt, loved and understood.

In this workshop you will learn how to:

• define relational resourcing, and show examples of how it works in AEDP;
• show three ways to undo aloneness in clinical work;
• effectively and safely work experientially with relational experience;
• understand how to facilitate the dyadic affect regulation of previously feared to be unbearable emotions;
• work with intense emotional experience, so as to be able to transform suffering into resilience
• recognize and entrain receptive aspects of the attachment experience;
• and use the patient’s experience of transformation to activate further healing and consolidation of gains already made.
