Seattle, Washington Workshop • Karen Pando-Mars, MFT

Working with Surprise and “Transformative Destabilization”  in AEDP
A Workshop at the Alder Grove Healing Arts Center, Seattle WA

with Karen Pando-Mars, MFT

“As much as transformation is desired, it is also frightening, for it challenges established identity.” – Fosha (2013) p.498

“This way of healing is actually asking patients to take risks in the very terrain where they have been most wounded.” – Pando-Mars (work in progress)

What do we do when being clinically effective involves dismantling the known and familiar, and when emerging transformative states bring chaos and confusion?

Through videotaped case examples and discussion, Karen will highlight key principles that can help us guide our clients through the terrain of self-experience that has been disowned, excluded and unformed. Using other case examples, Karen will address the role of surprise in the destabilization that accompanies transformation. She will show how recognizing a fractal of core self can begin the process of reorientation and discovery.  Participants will gain confidence and skill sets to help navigate the terrain of quantum change.

This workshop will:

  • Identify challenges that can arise when working relationally with AEDP
  • Identify challenges that can occur when working experientially with AEDP
  • Demonstrate how the AEDP therapist can regulate the client through the therapeutic relationship
  • Show how leaning into transformance drives can stabilize the client
  • Show how recognition motivates the client’s seeking behavior
  • Illustrate how therapist mirroring and delight helps the client form a sense of self
