Shame and AEDP
A Workshop at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library
with Jeanne Newhouse, NCPsyA
Shame walks into our offices daily, often in disguise. The acute emotional pain that is associated with shame makes it likely that clients will avoid talking about shame-eliciting issues. Shame reduces us in size and stature and thrives in isolation. As therapists we have to be on the lookout for it — shame detectives with our eyes and ears for this frequently hidden emotion, that when unattended to, can block everything else.
This seminar will explore what to do when we locate shame and how we can use all of our courage, roll up our sleeves and take it on. Together we will look at how in the context of a safe, relational environment and using ourselves in many different ways, we can begin to undo the unbearable state of aloneness that is the home of shame, and plant the seeds of new experience and self- compassion with a true other.
