Description
The AEDP™ Immersion course is a multi-day experience for therapists at any stage of their professional lives. Many who complete the training find their ‘perfect fit’ professional home in the AEDP model – and the AEDP community.
The Immersion course offers an in-depth exploration of AEDP psychotherapy’s transformative theory and practice. It includes not only lecture style didactic teaching but extensive use of real therapy video demonstrations plus one half day of small group experiential exercises accompanied by assistants, and opportunity for Q&A.
Participants can expect to graduate Immersion with both an understanding of the AEDP theory and hands-on skills to immediately put into practice with clients. It is an in-depth professional training that equips professionals to apply beginner level AEDP therapeutic techniques across diverse clinical populations.
And Immersion not only introduces AEDP psychotherapy, it explicitly facilitates the integration of the model into participants’ multi-modal clinical practices; this is especially true for those whose practices use other experiential, body-focused, trauma-based, relational and/or psychodynamic methods.

Hallmarks of Training

Prerequisites
AEDP Immersion is open to all licensed mental health practitioners. See here for detailed eligibility requirements. This course is a prerequisite for the Essential Skills training. While it counts toward certification, you don’t need to be pursuing certification to attend.

1. Explain the historical development of AEDP, identifying at least three key theoretical influences and how they shaped current AEDP® practice.
2. Identify and explain the five foundational elements of AEDP, describing the theoretical basis and clinical significance of each element.
3. Define “transformance” in AEDP theory and identify three clinical manifestations of transformance in case examples.
4. Describe the AEDP Four-State Model of Transformation, identifying the distinguishing phenomenological features of each state and the markers that signal movement from one state to the next.
5. Describe at least three specific AEDP techniques for welcoming, affirming, validating, and offering encouragement to clients through role-play exercises.
6. Identify three specific aspects of the AEDP therapeutic stance that build safety and trust in the therapeutic relationship.
7. Describe at least three body-focused AEDP techniques for facilitating access to core affect, explaining how somatic awareness and experiential engagement are used to deepen emotional processing within the therapeutic relationship.
8. Demonstrate three AEDP interventions for regulating anxiety and overwhelming affect during role-play scenarios.
9. Interpret the AEDP Triangle of Experience, accurately labeling its main categories and explaining how each influences observable client behaviors, emotional expressions, and verbal/nonverbal responses during therapy sessions.
10. Define and differentiate between “core affect,” “inhibitory affect,” and “defensive affect” in AEDP®, providing clinical examples of each.
11. Demonstrate moment-to-moment tracking of client affect, defense, and relational signals in AEDP, identifying at least three observable indicators that signal a shift in the client’s emotional state and describing the appropriate therapeutic response to each.
12. Apply at least two AEDP principles for adapting the therapeutic stance and intervention selection to diverse client identities and cultural contexts, explaining how factors such as race, gender, and relational history may shape the experience of safety, attachment, and emotional processing in treatment.
13. Identify two specific AEDP interventions for addressing defensive responses, explaining the clinical indicators for each intervention.
14. Describe at least three specific AEDP techniques to help clients stay with difficult emotional experiences during practice sessions.
15. Demonstrate four specific AEDP interventions that help patients tolerate, experience, and express emotions, identifying which phase of treatment each is most appropriate for.
16. Contrast standard therapeutic interventions and meta-therapeutic processing in AEDP by identifying at least four distinguishing features and explaining when to transition to meta-processing during therapy sessions.
17. Describe a sequence of at least three meta-therapeutic processing questions that effectively draw client attention to transformative moments, facilitate exploration of emotional shifts, and deepen the client’s experience of therapeutic change.
18. Describe at least three specific moment-to-moment AEDP clinical interventions that address different phases of emotional processing, providing clinical rationales for when each would be appropriately implemented.
19. Identify therapist aims and activities associated with at least two of the four states of the AEDP® transformational process within their own clinical sessions, explaining how specific moment-to-moment interventions facilitate or impede client movement through the states.
Course Content Level: Beginning
To receive credit, participants must pay the CE fee, attend the entire training, and complete the evaluation form. Partial credit is not available. CE certificates are issued after the evaluation is submitted.

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)
AEDP Institute provider #2307, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: October 31, 2025 – October 31, 2026. Social Workers completing the training will receive 33 continuing education credits.
New York Psychologists
AEDP Works, LLC is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0256. The AEDP® Model of Psychotherapy
The following statements describe the empirical foundation, accuracy, utility, scope, limitations, and clinical considerations relevant to the content presented in AEDP Courses.
Empirical Basis
AEDP® Psychotherapy is supported by peer-reviewed empirical research published in established scholarly journals. Effectiveness studies conducted within a practice research network demonstrate significant symptom reduction (e.g., depression, maladaptive negative cognitions, interpersonal functioning, experiential avoidance) and significant increases in positive indices of mental health (e.g., self-compassion, flourishing) across diagnostic presentations (Iwakabe et al., 2020), with longitudinal follow-up findings indicating maintenance of gains at six and twelve months (Iwakabe et al., 2022). These outcome studies evaluated a 16-session AEDP treatment protocol.
Additional empirical investigations examine therapeutic process variables associated with flourishing and metatherapeutic processing (Fosha & Thoma, 2020; Fosha, Thoma, & Yeung, 2019), as well as psychometric validation of measures assessing positive affective transformation, including the Moments of Flourishing Experience Scale (Fosha et al., 2024). Collectively, this body of outcome and process research provides empirical support for the clinical principles and interventions taught in AEDP Courses.
Accuracy, Utility, Scope and Limitations
AEDP is a transdiagnostic, transformation-oriented model of psychotherapy practiced with clients experiencing a wide range of psychological difficulties. Developed and primarily taught for individual psychotherapy, the model may be adapted by trained clinicians for work with couples, families, children, and groups when clinically appropriate; however, formal empirical research has focused primarily on its application in individual treatment.
AEDP was developed to address affective, relational, trauma-related, and depressive symptom presentations within an attachment-based, experiential framework. The empirical base is strongest for these domains, and findings from the 16-session research protocol should not be assumed to generalize automatically to all treatment formats, durations, or to individuals with severe or unstable psychiatric conditions.
AEDP was not designed as a first-line or stand-alone treatment for active psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder that is not medically stabilized, or active substance use disorders. In such cases, clinicians should ensure appropriate stabilization and integration with disorder-specific and medically coordinated care. As with all clinical models, effective application requires sound professional judgment, adherence to ethical standards, and practice within one’s scope of competence.
Ongoing Research
Current research continues to investigate the therapeutic processes and specific AEDP interventions associated with transformational change. In addition, AEDP-informed psychotherapy is being studied in collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai within randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.
Risks and Clinical Considerations
As with all experiential and trauma-focused psychotherapies, potential risks include temporary increases in emotional distress, activation of traumatic memories, heightened affective arousal, interpersonal sensitivity, or destabilization if interventions are misapplied or insufficiently titrated. Severe risks are uncommon but may include significant dysregulation in vulnerable individuals if adequate screening, stabilization, and monitoring are not conducted. The model emphasizes careful attunement, pacing, and ongoing assessment to mitigate these risks.
Meet the Lead Presenter: Jerry Lamagna, LCSW

Jerry Lamagna, LCSW is a senior faculty member with the AEDP Institute and a psychotherapist in private practice in New York and New Jersey. With training in psychodrama, EMDR, ego state therapy, trauma treatment and IFS and over 20 years studying AEDP, his clinical work has primarily focused on the treatment of complex trauma.
Along with Dr. Kari Gleiser, Jerry developed a modified version of AEDP for the treatment of dissociative disorders and has published three papers and a book chapter in AEDP 2.0: Undoing Aloneness and the Transformation of Suffering into Flourishing.
In addition to writing, supervising and providing psychotherapy, Jerry has presented internationally at conferences sponsored by the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD), the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration (SEPI), the International Experiential and Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA), National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Nalanda Institute, The Minnesota Trauma Project and the AEDP Institute.

North America: Licensed mental health practitioners as well as therapists practicing under the license of a supervising professional.
Beyond North America: Mental health professionals who hold licensure equivalent to North American standards including ongoing affiliation with an organization responsible for issuing and overseeing mental health credentials in their country or region.

Attendance and Make-up Policy
Institute Sponsored Courses Including Immersion, Essential Skills, Advanced Skill Modules, Seminars/Webinars and Institute Sponsored Core Trainings
The Institute provides handouts from missed hours or days but does not offer make-ups for missed course days.
Why? Group dynamics developed during a course are essential to the course’s success; so someone coming into a course for a short period of time is – regardless of their best intentions – disruptive to other participants and the course’s overall success.
CE credit: Full attendance is required to earn CE; partial credit is not available.
AEDP Level credit: if a participant attends 80% or more of a certification course (Immersion, Essential Skills or Advanced Skills), the Institute will apply the course towards AEDP Level advancement.
Refunds and Cancellations
Program Cancellation/Changes
The AEDP Institute reserves the right to cancel a training/ program prior to its start, in which case full refunds will be issued to participants for any tuition fees paid for the program. The AEDP Institute is not responsible for participant expenses including travel, childcare, missed practice sessions, etc.
In the rare situation that the AEDP Institute makes changes to advertised presenter(s), tuition fees will not be refunded.
By adhering to these policies, we aim to ensure a fair and consistent approach to cancellations, refunds, and transfer requests.

AEDP Institute Grievance Policy & Process
Overview and Commitment
AEDP Institute is fully committed to conducting all activities in compliance with all legal and ethical responsibilities in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants and the community. This policy sets out the procedure for receiving, reviewing, and responding to grievances.
While the Institute strives to provide fair and equitable treatment for all participants in its events and activities and makes every effort to anticipate potential concerns, it acknowledges that grievances may still occur.
We are committed to resolving grievances in a timely way, and in alignment with our Participant Agreement.
Grievance Submission Process
Grievances should be submitted online at aedpinstitute.org/complaint or mailed using this form. To make an anonymous suggestion, or grievance click here – this anonymous system allows you to engage with the Institute, back and forth, anonymously.
Note that Social Workers should indicate in their grievance that they are a social worker so the AEDP Social Work Consultant can be appropriately involved in the grievance resolution process.

Review and Resolution Process
Initial Review and Response Timeline
Grievances will be forwarded to the Lead Administrator who will review the matter and issue a decision or resolution in a timely manner (usually within 30 days).
Special Considerations for Speaker/Presentation Complaints
If the grievance concerns course content, the speaker, facilities, non-receipt of certificates and other miscellaneous occurrences, the Lead Administrator will pass on the comments to the speaker or other relevant party(ies), assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.
Confidentiality
The confidentiality of the aggrieved individual will be maintained except when disclosure is required by law, necessary to prevent imminent harm, or authorized by the individual. All confidential information will be shared only with authorized personnel involved in the complaint process.
Appeal Process – Filing an Appeal
If the individual who submitted the grievance is not satisfied with the Lead Administrator’s decision or resolution, they may submit an appeal to the AEDP Steering Committee.
Final Decision
The appeal will be reviewed in consultation with the AEDP Institute Steering Committee who may decide to bring in a third party consultant. A final decision will be made jointly by the the committee and the Lead Administrator. Once this final decision is issued, the grievance process will be considered complete.
Additional Feedback Opportunities
In addition to the procedure above, participants are given an opportunity to voice comments, concerns and general feedback in a survey that is provided at the completion of each course; the link to our anonymous grievance platform is included in this survey.
