Speaking to the Hearts of Men: Applying AEDP with Gender in Mind
an AEDP Workshop – at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City
with Dale Trimble, MA
Through video examples of Dale’s therapy with men, we will explore how gender can influence the processing of emotion to completion. Using stories, pictures, research and conversation we will examine gender differences as revealed by neuroscience; issues of male power, privilege & violence; contempt and shaming of men in today’s culture; compassionate confrontation to uncover the man’s “self-at-best” and the challenges and benefits of being a male or female therapist when working for a male patient. We will explore effective ways to manage our own responses when confronted with a man’s anger, defenses or shame; finally putting shame to work for healing and responsibility. Above all we will work in the tradition of E.E. Cummings: “always the beautiful answer that asks a more beautiful question.”
