NYC Workshop • Steven S. Shapiro, PhD with Natasha Prenn, LCSW
What Feeling? Working With Patients Who Don’t Take Easily To AEDP: Extended Defense Work, Building Self and Self-Compassion
This training will focus on learning practical tools to track patient material moment by moment, using both verbal and somatic cues, in an active and focused manner with a particular focus on removing barriers to deeper affective work. The goals will be to learn ways to transform resistance and accelerate the treatment process by exploring specific techniques to diminish and restructure defenses, anxiety and other inhibitory forces; separate anxiety and defense from expressive core affective phenomena; encourage a new and corrective experience; and access underlying healing resources and their associated adaptive action tendencies.
The format will include teaching modules to understand fundamental concepts with viewing of patient videos to illustrate the concepts, micro-analyzing them together in workshop style, as well as group exercises, taught by Steve. In addition, each afternoon there will be focused small group experiential skill building exercises, led by Natasha to enhance practical application and facilitate mastery of these skills.
Course Objectives
At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Learn to accurately track and differentiate different aspects within the Triangle of Experience, including both verbal and somatic processes, to optimize attunement and accelerate the healing process.
- Understand various ways to bypass resistance and restructure defenses.
- Understand various ways to reduce anxiety and other inhibitory forces which block progress in therapy.
- Describe ways to access underlying core affective experiences and utilize their healing potential as a catalyst to maximize patient’s healing.
