This course is intended for practitioners interested in AEDP,  Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy. Our focus is on AEDP’s transformational theory and practice using AEDP work at the edge of healing experience to repair attachment trauma. Making extensive use of clinical videotapes of actual therapy sessions as well as one half day of experiential work guided by assistants. The aim of this course is to introduce AEDP and facilitate its integration into clinical practices that make use of other experiential, body-focused, trauma-based, relational and/or psychodynamic methods.

AEDP seeks to undo the patient’s aloneness in the face of overwhelming suffering and to engage innate healing forces within, i.e., transformance, so as to heal trauma, restore vitality to self experience, and engender resilience.

AEDP Immersion is the first course in a series of certification courses for licensed therapists who are seeking to become AEDP Certified

AEDP Immersion: Theoretical Framework, Clinical Teaching from Videotapes, Experiential Exercises: The AEDP Immersion course will teach you how to work at the edge of transformational experience and how to use somatic-affective transformational markers to guide interventions. You will learn how to use AEDP’s rigorous transformational phenomenology to closely track clinical processes. Extensive use of clinical videotapes will demonstrate hallmark AEDP techniques.

In the Immersion course we also seek to undo clinicians’ aloneness by working to foster a vibrant community of like-minded, like-hearted others. It is the vision of the course to bring together clinicians from different perspectives who share an interest in AEDP specifically and/or in dynamic-experiential work in general, and who also each bring their own very special expertise, interest and experiences. In this way, Immersion is not only exciting and enlivening for its participants, but AEDP itself continues to be enriched and enhanced by being in communication with many deep sources of knowledge and wisdom.

What an Average Day Looks Like:

  • Theoretical presentations grounding the clinical work in the conceptual framework of AEDP’s healing oriented transformational theory.
  • Clinical teaching revolving around clinical videotapes, with a focus on the phenomenology of transformation as well as techniques and strategies of intervention. Special attention will be accorded to working with the experience of transformation, the healing affects, offering and receiving affirmation, and promoting core state experiencing, all in the context of transforming attachment trauma. In essence, this Immersion course is a soup-to-nuts course in AEDP.
  • And there is also opportunity to practice aspects of AEDP through structured experiential exercises.

Meet the Lead Presenter

Diana Fosha, PhD, Co-Director of AEDP Research

Diana Fosha, PhD, the developer of AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), is also Co-Director, with Shigeru Iwakabe, PhD, and Jennifer Edlin, MFT, of AEDP research.  For the last 20 years, Diana has been active in promoting a scientific basis for AEDP's healing-oriented experiential therapy. AEDP’s transformational theory, which elaborates the basis for putting positive neuroplasticity into clinical action, is similarly receiving increasing recognition. Drawing on affective neuroscience, attachment theory, mother-infant developmental research, and research documenting the undreamed-of plasticity in the adult brain, AEDP has developed an experiential clinical practice which reflects the integration of science, research and practice in psychotherapy.

Diana has always been passionate about phenomenology, meticulously examining the process of therapy by repeatedly watching, tracking, naming and defining micro change processes. This is a qualitative phenomenological research of its own kind, which has resulted in AEDP’s extensive and original phenomenology of the transformational process, and the close and detailed description of transformational affects, e.g., the healing affects, the tremulous affects, and core state. These concepts are closely aligned to and grounded in observational clinical data and they turn out to be universal: their experiential validity is evident in that the subjective experience of  therapists from many cultures across the globe -- Brazil, China, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Sweden, to name just a few-- resonate with these phenomena.

Since 2015, Diana Fosha’s deep commitment to research has extended to formal empirical research into AEDP outcome and process. This has involved supporting the development of AEDP’s PRN (Practice Research Network), a community of researchers and AEDP clinicians collaborating on AEDP clinical research.

From these research activities, in collaboration with her colleagues, Diana has been evolving AEDP's basic research stance: Like AEDP itself, research into AEDP processes and outcome is a collaborative creative endeavour amongst researchers, clinicians, and patients, based on mutual respect and appreciation, highest rigor and precision, open investigative attitude, and finally, the shared and generative joy of discovery.

Their work is reflected in empirical research on AEDP. The first paper documenting the effectiveness of AEDP was published in 2020 in the APA Journal Psychotherapy (Iwakabe, Edlin, Fosha, Gretton, Joseph, Nunninck, Nakamura & Thoma, 2020) and the second paper, which documents the long-term effectiveness of AEDP and the maintenance of gains after the termination of therapy, is being submitted for publication.
