About Essential Skills (ES1): AEDP Essential Skills course will provide practical skills for the application of AEDP as well as a thorough immersion in the theory underlying the practice. Our aim is to teach, in both left-brained and right-brained ways, different types of clinical interventions so that participants will emerge with both an understanding and a felt sense of how to “do” AEDP. Each day’s teaching will include didactic presentations of theory along with video of actual sessions conducted by AEDP Faculty followed by small group experiential exercises.
Routine for each module: AEDP skills are introduced with their theoretical foundations and then with illustrations by way of clinical videotapes; skills are then practiced in group experiential exercises. In online courses, exceptionally effective experiential exercises are held in online “breakout rooms.”
Faculty, Experiential Assistants and Clinical Video: These are the hallmarks of all AEDP trainings. In AEDP, we pride ourselves in how thoroughly and deeply we seek to both undo professional aloneness and engage in rigorous clinical teaching. Our faculty are excellent as academics, clinicians and teachers. Participants deeply appreciate how effectively faculty presenters’ clinical video demonstrates “AEDP in action.” And faculty have skilled accompaniment from a large number of Experiential Assistants – up to and often including one Experiential Assistant for every four participants. Description: AEDP Essential Skills, aimed at practitioners, will provide practical skills for the application of AEDP. Different skill sets will be introduced, explained, illustrated and practiced each week, so that participants will emerge with both an understanding and a felt sense of how to practice AEDP. The basic skill sets necessary to practice AEDP will be introduced each week, with theoretical foundations and with videotapes and group experiential exercises in the afternoon.
In AEDP, we pride ourselves in how thoroughly and deeply we seek to both (i) undo professional aloneness and (ii) engage in rigorous clinical teaching with skilled accompaniment. We are proud to say that our ES courses feature a high number of highly skilled assistants.
What we consider AEDP’s “essential skills” will be didactically demonstrated and experientially explored so that participants develop both a felt sense and a cognitive understanding of them. A key component of the experiential practices is the opportunity to “try on” sets of interventions as a therapist and to receive them as a client. We have found that learning new skills can give rise to experiences of safety, attachment security, transformation, increased therapeutic courage, and related phenomena; precisely the kinds of experiences AEDP facilitates for its clients. Each day course faculty lead small groups in practicing essential AEDP skills. The concentrated time that participants spend together immersed in learning inevitably leads to the development of a culture of trust and generosity that allows for risk-taking and a supportive environment that is uniquely suited

Meet the Presenters
Sigal Bahat, MA
Sigal Bahat, MA, teaches and supervises AEDP, in Israel, US and internationally, and leads an Israeli AEDP Core Training group. She has a private practice in Israel and also works remotely. Sigal started her career as a Dance Movement Therapist, and then completed training both as an Expressive & Creative psychotherapist, and as a Bio-energetic Analyst. She is certified and has many years of experience as a teacher of somatic-mindfulness approaches: The Alexander Technique, The Feldenkrais Method and Authentic Movement. Meeting AEDP and Dr. Diana Fosha met a decades-long quest to actively engage the intra-intimate-connections between psyche & soma:

Ronald J. Frederick, PhD
Ronald J. Frederick, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, co-founder of the Center for Courageous Living in Los Angeles, California and author of the award winning book Living Like You Mean It (Jossey-Bass, 2009) and the forthcoming book Loving Like You Mean It (Central Recovery Press, 2019). Since 1994, Dr. Frederick has been training in, practicing, and teaching AEDP, and has received extensive training and supervision from Dr. Fosha. Past experience includes fourteen years as a Clinical Supervisor at Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Park House Day Treatment Program, a post-doctoral fellowship in Medical Psychology and HIV in the AIDS Center Program at Roosevelt Hospital, NYC, where he later worked as a staff psychologist, and a year-long training rotation in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy at Beth Israel Medical Center, NYC. Dr. Frederick supervises trainees in AEDP, and has co-facilitated, with Dr. Fosha, AEDP Immersion Courses in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Big Sur, and San Diego. Noted for his warmth, humor, and engaging presentation style, Dr. Frederick is a popular speaker and trainer for both general and professional audiences worldwide. He regularly leads workshops at the Esalen Institute, the Kripalu Center, and the Cape Cod Institute, has provided professional trainings for the Lifespan Learning Institute, Professional Psych Seminars (PPS), and Premier Education Solutions (PESI), and frequently speaks to national, state, and local organizations. Dr. Frederick now teaches and has a private practice in Los Angeles, California.
Richard Harrison, PhD
Richard Harrison, PhD, is a Registered Psychologist and Certified AEDP Therapist and Supervisor with over 25 years’ experience as a clinician, educator, and group facilitator. He was trained and supervised in AEDP by Diana Fosha, founder of the model, and has taught with her at AEDP Immersion Courses in Vancouver and the UK. Richard is also a Certified EFT Therapist and Supervisor. He maintains a full caseload with individuals and couples in private practice, and teaches and supervises graduate students in the Counselling Psychology and Psychiatry departments at the University of British Columbia. Richard also leads the weekly supervision group for participating therapists in phase two of the AEDP research study. He has authored publications on the theory and practice of AEDP, preventing vicarious traumatization, therapist self-care, and supervision in professional journals, including “Nurturing Professional Transformance through AEDP Supervision” in the Transformance Journal, and his recent article in Psychotherapy: "Termination in 16-session accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP): Together in how we say goodbye." As a supervisor and presenter, Richard is valued for his warmth, clarity, and engaging style. He genuinely delights in helping people grow and thrive in their personal and professional lives.
Benjamin Lipton, LCSW
Benjamin Lipton, LCSW, is a founding faculty member of the AEDP Institute. He is based in New York City and travels nationally and internationally to teach and present AEDP to a broad range of professional audiences. Mr. Lipton pioneered the first AEDP Advanced Core Training programs (Bay Area and Seattle) and currently co-leads the AEDP Retreat Style Essential Skills course. His open and engaging teaching style and skill in translating complex ideas into clear and accessible learning points receives consistent praise from his audiences. Mr. Lipton is the editor of From Crisis to Crossroads: Gay Men Living with Chronic Illnesses and Disabilities (Haworth Press) and has published many clinical articles and book chapters in psychology and social service journals over the past two decades. His most recent article, co-authored with Diana Fosha, is on working with attachment in AEDP; Attachment as a Transformative Process in AEDP: Operationalizing the Intersection of Attachment Theory and Affective Neuroscience. Mr. Lipton has held adjunct faculty appointments at Columbia Presbyterian Department of Psychiatry and New York University School of Social Work and he serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services. Previously, he was the Director of Clinical Services at Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the world’s first and largest HIV/AIDS service organization. In addition to his expertise in AEDP, Mr. Lipton has training in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Solution-Focused therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Mr. Lipton is committed to the foundational principle of human development that change for the better, at every level of civilization, flourishes when people feel safe enough to be curious and take necessary risks. He is passionately dedicated to bringing this alive in both his practice and teaching.
Dale Trimble, MA
Dale Trimble, MA received his M.A. in Humanistic Psychology from Antioch University in 1977. In 1981 Dale co-founded the first court ordered treatment program for men who assault their partners in the province of British Columbia. He was the lead author of the Canadian syllabus for CP 602 – The Psychology of Trauma and Interpersonal Violence for City University of Seattle, Vancouver, BC campus, where Dale has taught and supervised graduate students. Known as a Canadian expert on working with men, Dale has travelled throughout Canada providing training for therapists on compassionate ways of helping men change.
In 2003-04 Dale was the recipient of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, President’s Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Profession. Dale has a private practice in Vancouver, BC where he works with individuals and couples focusing on resolution of early childhood trauma, anxiety, interpersonal violence and depression. His background includes extensive training in Emotionally Focused Couples therapy, EMDR and the clinical application of meditation and mindfulness practices to healing. When Dale first connected with AEDP in 2009 he knew that he had found his therapeutic home. Since then he has trained extensively in AEDP with Diana Fosha and Ben Lipton.
