About AEDP: Healing-oriented and attachment-based, AEDP’s practice translates current neuroscience and developmental research into moment-to-moment clinical practice. Simultaneously experiential and relational in its in-depth emotional explorations, AEDP’s interventions are deeply rooted in the dynamics of the transformational process that emerges in environments where the individual feels safe and known.

About Essential Skills (ES1): AEDP Essential Skills course will provide practical skills for the application of AEDP as well as a thorough immersion in the theory underlying the practice. Our aim is to teach, in both left-brained and right-brained ways, different types of clinical interventions so that participants will emerge with both an understanding and a felt sense of how to “do” AEDP. Each day’s teaching will include didactic presentations of theory along with video of actual sessions conducted by AEDP Faculty followed by small group experiential exercises.

Daily routine: AEDP skills are introduced each morning first with their theoretical foundations and then with illustrations by way of clinical videotapes; skills are then practiced in group experiential exercises each afternoon. For online courses, exceptionally effective experiential exercises are held in online “breakout rooms.”

Faculty, Experiential Assistants and Clinical Video: These are the hallmarks of all AEDP trainings. In AEDP, we pride ourselves in how thoroughly and deeply we seek to both undo professional aloneness and engage in rigorous clinical teaching.  Our faculty are excellent as academics, clinicians and teachers. Participants deeply appreciate how effectively faculty presenters’ clinical video demonstrates “AEDP in action.” And faculty have skilled accompaniment from a large number of Experiential Assistants – up to and often including one Experiential Assistant for every three participants. Course Summary, Objectives and Prerequisites:

What we consider AEDP’s “essential skills” will be didactically demonstrated and experientially explored so that participants develop both a felt sense and a cognitive understanding of them.  A key component of the experiential practices is the opportunity to “try on” sets of interventions as a therapist and to receive them as a client. We have found that learning new skills can give rise to experiences of safety, attachment security, transformation, increased therapeutic courage, and related phenomena; precisely the kinds of experiences AEDP facilitates for its clients. Each day course faculty lead small groups in practicing essential AEDP skills.  The concentrated time that participants spend together immersed in learning inevitably leads to the development of a culture of trust and generosity that allows for risk-taking and a supportive environment that is uniquely suited for optimal learning.

Course Objectives:
At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an AEDP therapist stance: welcome, affirm, validate, orient
  • Construct safety and undo aloneness
  • Apply moment-to-moment tracking to clinical practice
  • Construct dyadic safety and connection
  • Build and rebuild a secure attachment
  • Integrate healing and transformance from the get-go
  • Classify different aspects within the Triangle of Experience, including both verbal and somatic processes, to optimize attunement and accelerate the healing process
  • Analyze the 4 State Transformational Process: Working with relational trauma in a first session
  • Integrate Meta-therapeutic processing and transformational processes
  • Relate the experience of emotional experience: processing emotions to completion
  • Define attachment styles and utilize different interventions according to attachment style
  • Utilize various ways to regulate anxiety, bypass defenses and other inhibitory forces which block progress in therapy
  • Describe how to regulate/alleviate anxiety and traces of shame
  • Identify and access core affective experiences
  • Identify expressions of transformance in clients
  • Practice utilizing transformance strivings as a catalyst to maximize patient’s healing

Prerequisites:
We highly recommend that you complete Immersion before taking Essential Skills (ES1). If you are committed to learning AEDP and have not yet taken Immersion, please complete the recorded webinar Intro to AEDP prior to starting ES1.  Note, however, that Intro to AEDP is by no means a substitute for Immersion and Immersion is a requirement for AEDP certification.  You will earn 6 CE for taking the recorded Intro to AEDP course.  Once you have completed the course you may request a $100 credit towards a future Immersion course.

Meet the Lead Faculty:

Ronald J. Frederick, PhD

Ronald J. Frederick, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, co-founder of the Center for Courageous Living in Los Angeles, California and author of the award winning book Living Like You Mean It (Jossey-Bass, 2009) and the forthcoming book Loving Like You Mean It (Central Recovery Press, 2019). Since 1994, Dr. Frederick has been training in, practicing, and teaching AEDP, and has received extensive training and supervision from Dr. Fosha. Past experience includes fourteen years as a Clinical Supervisor at Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Park House Day Treatment Program, a post-doctoral fellowship in Medical Psychology and HIV in the AIDS Center Program at Roosevelt Hospital, NYC, where he later worked as a staff psychologist, and a year-long training rotation in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy at Beth Israel Medical Center, NYC.  Dr. Frederick supervises trainees in AEDP, and has co-facilitated, with Dr. Fosha, AEDP Immersion Courses in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Big Sur, and San Diego. Noted for his warmth, humor, and engaging presentation style, Dr. Frederick is a popular speaker and trainer for both general and professional audiences worldwide. He regularly leads workshops at the Esalen Institute, the Kripalu Center, and the Cape Cod Institute, has provided professional trainings for the Lifespan Learning Institute, Professional Psych Seminars (PPS), and Premier Education Solutions (PESI), and frequently speaks to national, state, and local organizations.  Dr. Frederick now teaches and has a private practice in Los Angeles, California.

 

Meet the Week 1 Guest Faculty:

Kate Halliday, LCSW

Kate Halliday, LCSW is a psychotherapist based in Ithaca New York. She has been in private practice since 1998 after a number of years spent in community human service agencies.

Over the course of a long career, Kate has been influenced and enlivened by a wide variety of experiences and teachers. She began her career as a nursery school and elementary school teacher, and went on to train as a clinical social worker. A writer and a pragmatist, she was initially drawn to Solution Oriented and Narrative therapy. A longing to feel more effective in treating trauma led her to train in EMDR in 2000, and in 2009 she began learning AEDP. Like many of us in the AEDP community, Kate fell in love with the model from the first moment she saw Diana Fosha present a videotape; and in the years since, Kate has enjoyed every moment of AEDP-related experience.

After several years of assisting in Essential Skills courses, Kate recognized that her longing for more ongoing lived experience of AEDP might be realized by generating an AEDP community where she lives in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Kate began offering AEDP training groups to local clinicians there in April, 2015, and is delighted that the project has taken wings. There are now ongoing groups studying and being supervised in AEDP with her. Many of these clinicians attend Institute trainings elsewhere, and some are now Experiential Assistants in Essential Skills classes. Kate’s original commitment was to make AEDP accessible and affordable to clinicians in her local region which is far removed from a large urban center; this remains a primary interest for her as she considers how AEDP may be promoted around the world.

Kate’s clinical work, evolving from early training in Developmental Psychology and subsequent professional experiences, has focused on Trauma, Dissociation, and their repair. She has always had a commitment to serving her own GLBT community, and for the past decade or more she has had something of a speciality in work with transgender people. She is also re-discovering a passion for time limited treatment as she participates in the AEDP Research project.

Kate currently supervises both in her office and over Zoom. She's been pleased to discover that the process of remote meeting turns out to offer most if not all of the emotional intimacy and efficacy of in person sessions. Especially for those of us in far-flung locations, online supervision and even therapy offer opportunities for personal and professional growth (and delight!).

 

Dale Trimble, MA

Dale TrimbleDale Trimble, MA received his M.A. in Humanistic Psychology from Antioch University in 1977. In 1981 Dale co-founded the first court ordered treatment program for men who assault their partners in the province of British Columbia. He was the lead author of the Canadian syllabus for CP 602 – The Psychology of Trauma and Interpersonal Violence for City University of Seattle, Vancouver, BC campus, where Dale has taught and supervised graduate students. Known as a Canadian expert on working with men, Dale has travelled throughout Canada providing training for therapists on compassionate ways of helping men change.

In 2003-04 Dale was the recipient of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, President’s Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Profession. Dale has a private practice in Vancouver, BC where he works with individuals and couples focusing on resolution of early childhood trauma, anxiety, interpersonal violence and depression. His background includes extensive training in Emotionally Focused Couples therapy, EMDR and the clinical application of meditation and mindfulness practices to healing. When Dale first connected with AEDP in 2009 he knew that he had found his therapeutic home. Since then he has trained extensively in AEDP with Diana Fosha and Ben Lipton.

 

Meet the Week 2 Guest Faculty:

Ben Medley, LCSW

Ben Medley, LCSW has a private practice in NYC where he works with individuals and couples and supervises both in-person and online. In addition to being an AEDP faculty member, Ben is also a certified Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT) Supervisor. He has presented nationally and internationally, including co-presenting with AEDP faculty member Ben Lipton the workshop Feeling Like a Man: Using AEDP to Overcome Shame and Heal Attachment Trauma in California, Massachusettes and in New York. He has also helmed Advanced Essential Skills courses in Stockholm and New York; taught/presented with the Essential Skills course in Parma, Italy; taught/ presented in Ithaca with the Central New York AEDP community; assisted with the NY Immersion Course with Diana Fosha; and has assisted in Essential Skills courses with Natasha Prenn, Ben Lipton and Eileen Russell. Ben also created and launched AEDP Jumpstart, a short-term, low-cost AEDP supervision group for those beginning AEDP supervision and/or beginning to review video of clinical material. Before private practice, Ben began a mental health program for study abroad students with the Scuola Lorenzo di Medici in Florence, Italy; worked in the Jewish Board of Family Services LGBTQ Unit; and worked in Greenwich House's HIV Mental Health and Chemical Dependency programs. His paper "Recovering the True Self: Affirmative Therapy, Attachment and AEDP in Psychotherapy with Gay Men" is published with the SEPI Journal: the Journal of Psychotherapy Integration. Ben earned his degree in Clinical Social Work with the NYU Silver School of Social Work.

 

Karen Pando-Mars, MFT

screen-shot-2016-12-13-at-9-19-26-amKaren Pando-Mars, MFT, is a psychotherapist in San Rafael, California, and Senior Faculty of the AEDP Institute. She was irresistibly drawn to AEDP in 2005 and captivated by the depth and breadth of this transformational model. She immersed herself in training and consultation with Dr. Fosha and three years of core training with Dr. Frederick. Ms. Pando-Mars is one of the founders of AEDP West and chaired the AEDP Institute Education Committee from 2011-2018.

Ms. Pando-Mars' passionate interest in what cultivates deep connection between Self and Other has been furthered by attachment theory and related neuroscience. She is known for her presence, warmth, and the clarity of her presentations. Videotapes of her clinical work are moving and inspiring examples of how AEDP’s explicit relational and experiential practices can help patients heal from relational trauma.

Ms. Pando-Mars arrived to AEDP with background in somatic and experiential therapies, including Focusing, Biofeedback, Process-Oriented Psychotherapy, Sandtray-Worldplay, EMDR, and Authentic Movement. These influences are deeply woven throughout her work. She was a founder of The Sandtray Network and a contributing editor of its journal. As adjunct faculty at Dominican University, in San Rafael, California, she taught AEDP as the overarching theoretical model in the Alternative and Innovative Psychotherapies course.

She presents workshops on AEDP,  teaches and leads Essential and Advanced Skills courses, Core training and supervision across the United States and internationally.  Her publication “Tailoring AEDP interventions to attachment style,” 2016 Transformance Journal, 6 (2) is the basis for her upcoming book, which will be co-authored with Diana Fosha and published by Norton & Co.
