About Essential Skills (ES1): AEDP Essential Skills course will provide practical skills for the application of AEDP as well as a thorough immersion in the theory underlying the practice. Our aim is to teach, in both left-brained and right-brained ways, different types of clinical interventions so that participants will emerge with both an understanding and a felt sense of how to “do” AEDP. Each day’s teaching will include didactic presentations of theory along with video of actual sessions conducted by AEDP Faculty followed by small group experiential exercises.

Routine for each module: AEDP skills are introduced with their theoretical foundations and then with illustrations by way of clinical videotapes; skills are then practiced in group experiential exercises. In online courses, exceptionally effective experiential exercises are held in online “breakout rooms.”

Faculty, Experiential Assistants and Clinical Video: These are the hallmarks of all AEDP trainings. In AEDP, we pride ourselves in how thoroughly and deeply we seek to both undo professional aloneness and engage in rigorous clinical teaching.  Our faculty are excellent as academics, clinicians and teachers. Participants deeply appreciate how effectively faculty presenters’ clinical video demonstrates “AEDP in action.” And faculty have skilled accompaniment from a large number of Experiential Assistants – up to and often including one Experiential Assistant for every four participants. Participants rave about the excellent attention and support they receive in this unique learning environment.

Course Description

Description: AEDP Essential Skills, aimed at practitioners, will provide practical skills for the application of AEDP. Our aim is to teach, in both left-brained and right-brained ways, skill sets, concrete and specific. Different skill sets will be introduced, explained, illustrated and practiced each week, so that participants will emerge with both an understanding and a felt sense of how to practice AEDP. The basic skill sets necessary to practice AEDP will be introduced each week, with theoretical foundations and with videotapes and group experiential exercises in the afternoon.

In AEDP, we pride ourselves in how thoroughly and deeply we seek to both (i) undo professional aloneness and (ii) engage in rigorous clinical teaching with skilled accompaniment. We are proud to say that our ES courses feature a high number of highly skilled assistants.

What we consider AEDP’s “essential skills” will be didactically demonstrated and experientially explored so that participants develop both a felt sense and a cognitive understanding of them. A key component of the experiential practices is the opportunity to “try on” sets of interventions as a therapist and to receive them as a client. We have found that learning new skills can give rise to experiences of safety, attachment security, transformation, increased therapeutic courage, and related phenomena; precisely the kinds of experiences AEDP facilitates for its clients. Each day course faculty lead small groups in practicing essential AEDP skills. The concentrated time that participants spend together immersed in learning inevitably leads to the development of a culture of trust and generosity that allows for risk-taking and a supportive environment that is uniquely suited

  • HEALING FROM THE GET GO! The ABC’s of AEDP including our Transformance stance, moment to moment tracking, & experiencing over explaining.
  • THE CLINICAL ROADMAP OF AEDP We are a 4-State Model with intentional experiential language for AEDP interventions.
  • AEDP AND ATTACHMENT  Using AEDP’s relational focus to build, renovate & reconstruct a secure therapeutic attachment.
  • STATE 1: THE TOP OF THE TRIANGLE Working with Anxiety and Defense
  • STATE 2: EXPANDED ADAPTIVE AND MALADAPTIVE CORE AFFECT How we recognize these Affects and what we do.
  • METAPROCESSING – AN AEDP HALLMARK Capitalizing on the experience in the room to integrate and cement transformational processes.
  • STATE 1, DEFENSES, IN DETAIL  Transforming resistance and high anxiety.
  • STATE 2 TO STATE 3: EMOTION PROCESSING AND PORTRAYALS How to access, deepen and process core affect to completion.

  • BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER Reviewing and metaprocessing together what we’ve learned

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate an AEDP therapist stance: welcome, affirm, validate, orient
  • Construct safety and undo aloneness
  • Apply moment-to-moment tracking to clinical practice
  • Construct dyadic safety and connection
  • Build and rebuild a secure attachment
  • Integrate healing and transformance from the get-go
  • Classify different aspects within the Triangle of Experience, including both verbal and somatic processes, to optimize attunement and accelerate the healing process
  • Analyze the 4 State Transformational Process: Working with relational trauma in a first session
  • Integrate Meta-therapeutic processing and transformational processes
  • Relate the experience of emotional experience: processing emotions to completion
  • Define attachment styles and utilize different interventions according to attachment style
  • Utilize various ways to regulate anxiety, bypass defenses and other inhibitory forces which block progress in therapy
  • Describe how to regulate/alleviate anxiety and traces of shame
  • Identify and access core affective experiences
  • Identify expressions of transformance in clients
  • Practice utilizing transformance strivings as a catalyst to maximize patient’s healing

Meet the Presenter

Kate Halliday, LCSW

Kate Halliday, LCSW is a psychotherapist based in Ithaca New York. She has been in private practice since 1998 after a number of years spent in community human service agencies.

Over the course of a long career, Kate has been influenced and enlivened by a wide variety of experiences and teachers. She began her career as a nursery school and elementary school teacher, and went on to train as a clinical social worker. A writer and a pragmatist, she was initially drawn to Solution Oriented and Narrative therapy. A longing to feel more effective in treating trauma led her to train in EMDR in 2000, and in 2009 she began learning AEDP. Like many of us in the AEDP community, Kate fell in love with the model from the first moment she saw Diana Fosha present a videotape; and in the years since, Kate has enjoyed every moment of AEDP-related experience.

After several years of assisting in Essential Skills courses, Kate recognized that her longing for more ongoing lived experience of AEDP might be realized by generating an AEDP community where she lives in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Kate began offering AEDP training groups to local clinicians there in April, 2015, and is delighted that the project has taken wings. There are now ongoing groups studying and being supervised in AEDP with her. Many of these clinicians attend Institute trainings elsewhere, and some are now Experiential Assistants in Essential Skills classes. Kate’s original commitment was to make AEDP accessible and affordable to clinicians in her local region which is far removed from a large urban center; this remains a primary interest for her as she considers how AEDP may be promoted around the world.

Kate’s clinical work, evolving from early training in Developmental Psychology and subsequent professional experiences, has focused on Trauma, Dissociation, and their repair. She has always had a commitment to serving her own GLBT community. She is also re-discovering a passion for time limited treatment as she participates in the AEDP Research project.

Kate currently supervises both in her office and over Zoom. She's been pleased to discover that the process of remote meeting turns out to offer most if not all of the emotional intimacy and efficacy of in person sessions. Online supervision and even therapy offer opportunities for personal and professional growth (and delight!).

Meet the Guest Presenters

Benjamin Lipton, LCSW

Ben LiptonBenjamin Lipton, LCSW, is a founding faculty member of the AEDP Institute.  He is based in New York City and travels nationally and internationally to teach and present AEDP to a broad range of professional audiences.  Mr. Lipton pioneered the first AEDP Advanced Core Training programs (Bay Area and Seattle) and currently co-leads the AEDP Retreat Style Essential Skills course.  His open and engaging teaching style and skill in translating complex ideas into clear and accessible learning points receives consistent praise from his audiences.  Mr. Lipton is the editor of From Crisis to Crossroads: Gay Men Living with Chronic Illnesses and Disabilities (Haworth Press) and has published many clinical articles and book chapters in psychology and social service journals over the past two decades.  His most recent article, co-authored with Diana Fosha, is on working with attachment in AEDP;  Attachment as a Transformative Process in AEDP: Operationalizing the Intersection of Attachment Theory and Affective Neuroscience.  Mr. Lipton has held adjunct faculty appointments at Columbia Presbyterian Department of Psychiatry and New York University School of Social Work and he serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services.  Previously, he was the Director of Clinical Services at Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the world’s first and largest HIV/AIDS service organization.  In addition to his expertise in AEDP, Mr. Lipton has training in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Solution-Focused therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy.  Mr. Lipton is committed to the foundational principle of human development that change for the better, at every level of civilization, flourishes when people feel safe enough to be curious and take necessary risks.  He is passionately dedicated to bringing this alive in both his practice and teaching.

Annika Medbo, MA

Annika Medbo, MA is a Licensed Psychotherapist, Licensed Physiotherapist, AEDP Supervisor and teacher. She has a private practice in Stockholm.

Annika´s clinical interests are in trauma and dissociation with a special interest in the use and development of non-verbal processes that can work to enhance and facilitate
growth and healing. This interest started before AEDP when Annika was working in psychiatric clinics and striving to meet her patients “beyond diagnosis”, listen to the
nonverbal “calls” for connection, rather than focusing on defenses and pathology. Her interest for nonverbal processes expanded when she supervised psychotherapy students in Infant Observation at a major Psychotherapy Institute in Stockholm. When Annika discovered AEDP, she found a theoretical base and language for these kind of processes. She loves to develop ways to teach about the 'creative right brain' and the capacity in the human being to find new, personal ways to heal and grow if provided with 'the right circumstances'. In her teaching her strivings are to 'simplify the complexity' and teach the theory from the 'bottom up'.

She has assisted and presented internationally at Essential Skills (ES1)and has been a Guest presenter at the Immersion Course (London, 2020 with Diana Fosha). She supervises and teaches, together with Anna Christina Sundgren, AEDP Core Trainings nationally and internationally and is one of the founders of the Swedish AEDP Community.

In addition to AEDP, Annika is trained in body-oriented Psychotherapy.
