Congratulations to Elley Newton, LCSW-R– AEDP’s newest Certified Therapist!

Dear Beloved Community,

It is with the utmost joy and delight that I and Kate Halliday bring you the announcement that Elley Newton is now a Certified AEDP Therapist!

I have had the good fortune of being Elley’s certification supervisor and can wholeheartedly attest to her excellence as an AEDP Certified Therapist. Elley possesses all the qualities as a person as well as a therapist that you would want in a relationship. Elley brings such a warm, caring presence that is both respectful and grounding. She is highly attuned, regulating and tracks the process so skillfully. Elley’s client’s feel so accompanied by her and she is a wonderful transformance detector who is always on the lookout for those glimmers to cultivate. Elley is also highly self-reflective and open to learning.

I also had the privilege of having Elley be an Experiential Assistant in one of the ES Trainings that I Co-Lead Assisted and her participants were delighted with her. One said: “I hope you become a Supervisor soon!”

This is what Kate Halliday had to say about her experience supervising Elley:

I am full of delight to be celebrating this significant milestone for Elley. Elley is one of the members of the AEDP Finger Lakes regional group here in North western New York State, so it’s with special pride that we recognize her. As her supervisor in a long-running group, I feel especially proud *with* her that she’s managed to find time (and the determination) between her full caseload and parenting a still- young child to dig deep into the model, internalized it, and demonstrate her understanding with such reliably excellent clinical work.

From my first encounter with her I have been impressed by Elley’s quiet, gentle energy; her kindness in meeting each client wherever they need to be met; her humor and intelligence in the face of human vulnerability, and her almost understated competence. I had the privilege to have Elley assist as I taught in ES1 recently, and was not surprised to see her equanimity and kindness shine there, too.

Hooray Elley! We look forward to all your contributions to our community, near and far, in the future. Kate Halliday.

Of Elley’s work, her reviewers shared:

Therapist embodies the spirit of AEDP working with a client with neurodivergent and

transgender issues. The session feels very AEDPish. The client in me feels an overall

deep respect and care coming from the therapist. There was clear relentless working

with the defences through bypassing and an attempt to melt the defenses. There is

clear close tracking of the triangle of experience, whether client is showing defenses,

anxiety, and when client is showing core affect, in this case that of coordinated relational

experience. There was clear tracking of the internal working model.

Therapist is impressive in her sense of clear, calm presence, and unwavering being with

the client. Clear, close and precise tracking with optimal responses in various states of

the transformational process. While it is clear that therapist it’s going beyond

competence in understanding theory, and practice of accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy.

And, the second reviewer said:

I was able to experience Elley’s care and compassion for her patients as she demonstrated her ability to foster their Transformance in her demonstration tapes.  She did a great job of demonstrating strong moment to moment tracking, detecting glimmers of Transformance, and privileging the emergence of positive experiences.  She was able to disarm defenses, maintain an experiential focus, and undo aloneness in her work.

Elley demonstrated her knowledge of the AEDP theory and was able to apply it by using her AEDP skills.  She demonstrated the judicious use of self-disclosure and a competency in the application of the AEDP methods.

And, of her own AEDP journey, Elley writes:

AEDP has transformed the way I practice, for which I am so grateful, but it has also transformed the way I relate to myself and others in all areas of my life. For that, I am eternally grateful. Having a model that provides a map but also allows for the art and humanity of therapy to flow through it feels empowering and steadying. The relationality of AEDP unlocked a self-at-best within me that has completely transformed me as a therapist in a way that I cannot even begin to expound upon.

I feel deeply honored to be joining the ranks of AEDP Certified Therapists. The process of certification was a labor of love that significantly deepened my understanding of the model and enlivened my skills. I feel such immense gratitude and respect for the clients who have allowed me to use our work and have learned so much about the theory of AEDP and how I show up as an AEDP therapist through my analysis of these sessions and my time in supervision.  I feel a deep sense of gratitude to my supervisors, Steve Carroll, who helped me trust and believe in myself, and Kate Halliday, who showed me how to be my most openhearted and loving self. I relish my time with the EA community where I continue to deepen my skills and delight in sharing this model with other therapists. My gratitude continues to numerous other teachers whose work and wisdom has touched me during trainings, my own AEDP therapist who helped me learn firsthand the transformational powers of AEDP, and to Diana Fosha for bringing this model to all of us.

So, with continued delight, we celebrate Elley’s wonderful accomplishment in becoming a Certified AEDP Therapist and you can do so by contacting her at: Elley Newton <elleynewton@gmail.com>

Wishing all the best to our beloved community,

Steve Carroll
